that doesn't make any sense at all to me but I'm not specifically familiar with this model. there's no traditional reason why hardware would, or even could, be restricted from running a client OS. Unless there's something extremely unique about this model, specifically it's motherboard, I can't imagine how it would even be technically possible.

Here's a guide to installing Windows 8.1 Pro on it... http://homeservershow.com/install...l10v2.html

I don't see why you can't install the home versions.

Servers can be used for data storage like pictures, music and videos which most home servers are used for. High end servers are designed for reliability due to the redundancy of network, power and data just like where your Facebook or Google data are stored or even where SD website is stored.

I am running a couple of Lenovo TS140 i3-4130 servers as desktops and they run great. They were $200 a couple of years ago. I have been looking for another one but with a newer i3 in the same $200 price range.

Beware, this has a VERY high bar for setup.NO documentation, you need to make an account at HP AND have a valid warranty just to get a bootable service pack ISO, run it THEN download and burn ANOTHER 2GB ISO. to boot to to set up the raid. After that I was able to start the server 2012 install, but still could not write to any drivers on the RAID. After 7 hours of wrestling with it, it started shutting down in the middle of booting, which by the way mine could be timed with a sundial... I don't do servers like i used to but I've built dozens of Supermicros and also worked with Dell and older HP's. I'm returning mine and going to look at the Lenovo that was mentioned above....

ESXi is the reason I would run a server at home nowadays. ESXi baremetal hypervisor and run multiple operating systems virtualized. This includes testing things and virtual routers like CSR1000v. Much more convenient to do it on a separate box than my laptop in many cases.

I'd like to learn these things as well. My budget is very limited as I'm a student. Would you recommend buying a used rack server? I know nothing about esxi. Basically to get started I'd just like to ssh into one or more virtual machines on this through my home router so I'm not running virtual box on my laptop all the time.
