How does the Surface book compare to Macbook air? Which is better for college?

You cant compare Surface Book with Macbook Air. Surface book outperforms Macbook Pro in terms of specs. Surface pro with lighter and smaller form factor is a competitor for 12" Macbook Air retina.

The surface devices allow you great notes taking with the Pen. Both Surface and Macbooks are extremely nice devices. Macbook air is a little underpowered though, though Macbooks really shine in battery life vs Surfaces. It boils down to which OS you prefer, and if that is not a preference, I would go with Surface devices based on what you get in a per dollar basis, and the pen and touchscreen functionality.

This above is coming from someone who owns a Macbook Pro Retina 13 for personal use, and have Surface Pro 4 from work, so I can say I am hugely familiar with both.

I'm surprised this is not getting more looks considering the surface pro 8gb/256gb is only $200 more than the microsoft deal which is for the 4gb/128gb model

Does this unit come with keyboard/case and stylus? I know the new Acer Switch Alpha 12 Corei7s have them included. The Acer's are also liquid cooled, so no fan.

No unfortunately it doesn't. That's still extra. I actually got the surface book for 1100 for that reason.
It's an awesome machine, I have had it for 2 days now.

For $100 less you can get Core i7, Acer Switch Alpha 12 2-in-1, 12" QHD Touch, Intel Core i7, 8GB Memory, 512GB SSD. I like this because it is fan-less!

https://amzn.com/B01ER4AX9M

And it doesn't require EDU.

I bought both the Surface Pro 4 and the latest MacBook Air in the past month (thanks, SD!) and IMO the Surface Pro 4 is by far the better value.

The Air is largely unchanged from the 2012 model I sold after upgrading. Even comparing the Surface Pro 4 to the new 12" Macbook it's hard to argue for the Macbook. Apple doesn't have any touchscreen laptops or any laptops with removable keyboards to function as a tablet experience. The included pen is also something the Macbooks are lacking (pen technology has greatly improved and the Surface Pro 4 is a solid performer).

To sum up: Apple makes really nice hardware, but the Surface Pro 4 looks like 2015 technology while the Macbook Air looks like 2010 tech. If you prefer OSX you'll be totally fine with an Air or Macbook for college, but it's not as much bang for your buck as these Surface Pro 4 deals.

I can't say for sure. I know some people who have the Surface that felt there were some issues. As for Acer, they've put out some pretty good products lately. It will be interesting to see how well this does. I am wondering if their liquid cooling really works as well as advertised!

I'm going to have to go check out the switch at bestbuy and see how the build quality is. So far I'm in love with the surface book, even with it being over priced for the specs that it has.

I went to 2 best buys in southern california (Pasadena and Montebello) and neither would price match. Now the Tustin Microcenter is out of stock.

Is there a microcenter near you? I think it has to be within 25 miles of the best buy location due to store pickup, But there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to match it. They matched it for me no questions asked, except website and proof of edu discount (email)

Both were only willing to match the price before the student coupon.

what they did for me was match the sale price at microcenter and then applied the student discount to match the price after student discount. The manager had to override it in order to apply the student discount after the price match.
