Video card "upgrade"

smoothsl 157 16 August 9, 2016 at 08:06 AM
So, I've recently purchased a larger monitor for my home office. The pavilion 32", which has hdmi and displayport only. Love the monitor.. However, when using the displayport connection I have the same issue with not being able to turn off the monitor and let me pc sleep. It gives displayport link errors when I turn it back on. My HD 6850 can't do 2560x1440 over HDMI but does seem to operate without errors over HDMI. So, here I am looking for a new video card.

I want something that is a step forward from my 6850. I don't game much anymore, but my son is 10 and getting more in to PC games. Would an RX 460 be a step forward, or should I go with the 470?
Would like to stay AMD since the monitor has freesync over DP and HDMI.
My CPU is an i7-2600k clocked at 4.4ghz so should be good there.

An RX460 may not be much different from a 6850, but a 470 probably is: http://www.tomshardware.com/revie...,4388.html

The chart doesn't seem to have the RX4yy cards listed, but the 260 and 360 are both on the same tier as the 6850, meaning they are not an upgrade. The 270 and 370 are 4 tiers above (and therefore the 470 probably is as well), which would be a good upgrade from the 6850. Obviously the higher you can go on that chart within your budget, the better.

Thanks for the reply.. Just placed an order for a 470.

Real pisser that I have to go through this because the displayport seems to suck on my current card. Hopefully I can get this worked out..

A video card from even 3 to 4 years ago has been surpassed by newer versions from the same manufacturer as well as the competitors to AMD [such as nVidia Cards]

Many people can and have used a PC from day one to it's end of life without upgrading any of it's components. Most of those people don't even know that the option exists.

I would like to congratulate you for being willing to investigate your video card upgrades.

I can't give you better advise than you have already received but I can agree that if I were you I would upgrade as much as I could afford to pay. Yes I know you already ordered your new video card but that is still my advise.
