MacBook Air and SD card used for DSLR

New to Apple so need some help...

I tried inserting my SD card into my new MacBook Air to transfer some photos I had recently taken. First, I thought it was weird that the SD card sticks out of the slot, but I googled pictures and I guess that's the way it is on MacBook Airs. The card was not recognized because it didn't show up like it's supposed to according to my Googling.

I'm assuming it needs to be reformatted for Mac like most things, but my question is... Will reformatting cause any issues with the SD card working in the camera?

I know I will have to transfer photos out of it first since reformatting will erase all photos.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not so sure the card needs to be reformatted. Digital Cameras pretty much only worth with cards formatted FAT or exFAT. Both of these file systems are supported by OS X.

The safest things to do compatibility wise is usually to reformat a card from you camera but this will erase everything. Can you post a screen shot from disk utility on your mac or disk management on a pc?

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?
Have you ever stopped to think the long-term GOP immigration policy might be to make the United States of America a less desirable place to live than Mexico?

I feel like an idiot, it seems to be working now. I tried reading the the SD card on my wife's macbook pro and it worked right away there, so it could not have been what I originally thought (formatting issue). I then tried restarting my macbook air and it now reads the SD card when inserted. I guess I should have tried restarting first since that usually fixes most issues.

Thanks for trying to help though.
