Need new work desk phone, why is it $500?

My work has a phone the NEC ETW-4R-1. It is old and is falling apart. You can't hear anything, and you have to hold the battery up and pushed in or else the phone buzzes. The business won't replace it because it's too expensive. I couldn't believe it, so I googled it. A new one is $500. A used or refurbished is about $300. Why is this phone so expensive? I see one on Ebay right now for $50 I want to jump on it. But for that price range I'm worried about compatibility. Is it plug and play? Does it require some kind of special installation?

1st of all that phone is obsolete. You have a couple choices:

Duct tape for the battery problem.

Buy the replacement with your own money.

Find a company that isn't so cheap, BTW how can you do your job without a phone? Wink (oops "it stopped working boss").

I agree. Every time someone call the store a different department has to get the call and bring the phone over. You'd think that 500 is well worth the time savings. By the way this phone has been like this for over 2 years

just go to another office at night and swap phones with your boss Smilie

Seriously just open it up and break it!

*** more accurately that entire phone system (all of it) is obsolete. There is a slightly newer cordless model that would probably work, but I wouldn't spend the money.

The OP's boss clearly strives to redefine the meaning of the word cheapskate. It's time to move to an IP phone system. Surplus equipment on ebay is a good option (look at brands like Cisco and Grandstream). IP phones could also reduce your monthly bills.

From past threads, I'm not under the impression the company you work for is that large.
How many employees?
How many phones?
How many phone lines?
small business, franchise, or corporate owned?

Example of things on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-6-...1702761394
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USED-Link...1637586935
Just a few random examples, not saying these are ideal for you.

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?
Have you ever stopped to think the long-term GOP immigration policy might be to make the United States of America a less desirable place to live than Mexico?

900mzh phone, didn't know people still had those/used them. It's expensive because it looks like it's specialized to use with that PBX. Why are you using a cordless phone at an office anyways?
