It depends what you mean by "supporting 4k". If you're just looking to output that resolution, most any card will do. If you want 60hz over HDMI then you'll want one with HDMI 2.0. If you want to play back h.265 10 bit video (the standard for 4k/hdr blu rays), then you'll want a gtx 950/960 or any 10xx series. If you're looking to play games at 4k, then at least a gtx 1070 or 1080 to get reasonable frame rates at medium or higher settings.

If you're looking for something for general, non gaming use at 4k, I'd recommend a 950 or 1060 depending on your budget.

This is good for playing on high settings at 1080p? I'm trying to help out this kid who just built a computer. Please respond only if you know for sure.

No, this will play most games at 1080p, but many of them will need to have settings lowered.

This card is a great option to create a basic 24/7 nvidia gamestream server. You can throw it in pretty much any basic system with a pci slot, as it doesn't require any psu connection, and the 720p high/1080p medium quality you'll get in most games is plenty good for streaming quality. I run one with a broadwell i3 for remote streaming of PC games in Steam to my nvidia shield or ultrabook (using moonlight). I believe it's still the fastest GPU you can get in low profile too, though not at this price.

I had this exact card until about 4 days ago (when I replaced it with an RX 480). I had a 4K monitor + a 1080 monitor, both driven by this card with zero issues.

I played Team Fortress 2 at 4K resolution with NO problems at all. But I had to turn the settings down for Just Cause 3 (understandably).

For just driving a 4K display with video playback this card is more than up to the task. For gaming obviously it's a different story and depends entirely on the game.

I have been using this card for nearly 2 years. It's essentially Xbox One visuals if the game is properly optimized on the PC. As for high settings @1080p, yes for games that are made for last gen consoles as lead platforms. No if the games are built for current gen as lead.

It's still perfect for those with very low end PSUs and no 6-pin connectors.
