Oh, and I upgraded mine to a 3TB drive (400+ hours) just today. Dead simple. Literally the hardest part was removing the cover. Highly recommend. http://www.rosswalker.co.uk/tivo_upgrade/
I ordered this from Amazon on 8/11 (3 days ago) for about $14 more. My chat with them to price match their own price was unsuccessful. They suggested I return it and reorder. I will refuse the shipment tomorrow and already reordered tonight. It does not appear to be a very efficient policy to suggest I return it and reorder. Oh, well - I'll end up getting the better price.

these can very easily be modified for use with cable. all you need to do is find a cheap donor unit and get the bracket out of it and put it in this one...

Does that mean for use with cable and OTA? Or does it have to be one or the other? Tivo did make one that could do both a few years ago. Can you provide a website link? Also I would think that would void the lifetime service when it updates itself.

Can you point us to a page or how to do so? If the cable channels are encrypted how is this unit going to work?

Curious how people that have Hulu are using this. Hulu provides access to most shows the next day, which in my mind, eliminates the need to record a show to watch at a later time. So those people must be buying this for the guide? Commercial skip? Pause live TV? All of the above?

I can't imagine it's because of the built in streaming services because those can be had for a much lower priced device.

I would agree except for live local/national sports. The more interesting question would be Hulu vs cable. In this case it would depend on on which cable networks are on Hulu.

I have Hulu and use my Tivo OTA primarily to record CBS shows. With very few exceptions, they are not on Hulu. And their catch - up viewing offerings online shovel more ads than broadcast TV - horrible - unwatchable. They keep compressing availabilty of shows online , and they always have their hand unashamedly out for more money for less 'product'. (CBS gripe over. Tivo is also nice for sports. And many popular shows have fairly effective crowd-sourced commercial skip.)

Does this add a cable card? Because if not then you are SOL with most cable companies nowadays. Maybe you can enlighten me. I don't have cable but it's nice to know you can drop in a cable card and save $10+ on cable bill if I do get it again.

If you don't mind less tuners for OTA (I don't need more than 2 at a time). I'd look on eBay. The tivo premiere's with lifetime can be had for around $250 or cheaper (I paid $235 for a 320gb premiere with lifetime). Tivo started doing $99 lifetime on premieres and other models that had 3 years of continuous service so a lot of people pay the $99 and sell on eBay when they upgrade units. Drop in a 1tb+ hard drive and you have a formidable unit although older gen. I haven't upgraded hard drives since I just want it for pausing and rewinding football games live.

If you can pull the cover off and can swap out fans and hard drives shouldn't be scared to buy used. The fan on my mom's premiere went out and she was thinking of dropping another $300+ on a new unit (they give half off new lifetime subs if current lifetime member and had payed full price at one time) just because the fan was noisy... $12 for a fan off amazon and 5 minutes of time and it was as quiet as new.
