Open-WRT support [openwrt.org]
so below statement is not true
These routers are not supported by open source firmware (eg DD-WRT or Tomato)

I have had this router for a year now and its awesome, but to take full advantage of its abilities you have to have wireless devices that use wireless AC.

For you tech type people, it can be modded with dd-wrt AND, go to ebay and buy the antenna mod for it. You instantly have a router that hangs with the best routers and way more customizable. The antenna mod is not for novices, solder abilities are a must.

It doesn't have AC

I bought the EA4500 a few weeks ago, and it was a v1. Since the pictures show the Cisco lighted logo on top, I would assume all are v1 and support OpenWrt and Debian. The EA3500 is also supported on OpenWrt.

These are N routers, has nothing to do with AC.

BEWARE OF LINKSYS REFURBS!!! I bought the EA6500 on Amazon from the "Official Linksys Store" as "certified refurbished" I treid to get it working for hours but it was busted. I couldn't even ping the router via an ethernet cable. The description said 90 day warranty so I called up Linksys's tech support. I described that I just bought it a day ago but upon using the router's serial # he said that it was purchased 2014 and warranty has run out. I told him I had the amazon receipt and it said 90 day warranty on it. The guy refused to help me unless I paid $20 for their premium support package. I returned that shit immediately to Amazon.

I thought I would save myself a few bucks by buying certified refurbished from a reputable company and that it wouldn't be broken. Guess it still happens.

With OpenWRT or something similar, would I be able to use a second unit as a range extender of sorts? I'd like to put one on my desk where all my hard-wired connections are, and then put another one across the house and have the second one be connected wirelessly to the first.

Amazon has a plethora of these and other Linksys used.
Has anyone used the USB 2 port to play media files?

I bought this router about couple weeks ago brand new in walmart for 25$ was one of those lucky days where u ran into their awesome clearance prices. Good router set up was a breeze i love that it has 2 channels so u can connect to 2.4 and 5ghrz, also has guest account which is pretty cool also

Not with this specific one but that's pretty much a staple of USB ports on a router. I've done it with my past three linksys routers no problem. Plug in a USB hard drive and it shares it out.
