can't work out what this does, I'm no green thumb that's for sure

can it be used to spread grass seeds on naked dirt?

Yes, and also granular fertilizer, weed preventer, granular iron, etc. Less accurate than a "drop" spreader, but also less time consuming.

Man, I just bought 2 of these last week when I saw that they were marked down to $15. Thought that was a good deal.

Users complain of its tiny tiny size and also that fertilizer gets caught up in the hollow wheels, then dumps the whole amount in one spot causing grass to burn.

Can you use it to spray salt in winter?

There's a bunch around Austin for $15 and $7. I'd buy one if I didn't have one already. They're great for occasional lawn fertilization.

Well I thought I scored when I bought the next size up- the Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader for $25 this weekend. Just checked brickseek and some Walmart's are stocking it at $17.50. Dang! Brickseek ID 16828972

I used this exact spreader for putting salt down on my driveway and sidewalks and found that after one winter season the gear mechanism directly under the hopper got corroded from the salt and snow coming together at that spot while pushing it through the snow. It then sat and eventually became so corroded that the gears and wheels wouldn't turn and became useless. I would say that it can be used for salt but perhaps take better care of it than I did and clean it/spray off the salt when done spreading it. JMHO.
