So wait, this thing will pretend to be a single drive, but in reality you are running up to 3 drives in RAID?

Didn't know this type of thing existed.

Too bad it only supports up to 4TB drives, with all the 8TB drive deals going on lately... especially since the majority of drive deals have been Seagate and people will probably have lots of failures lol

Apparently it doesn't do this stuff and is just a case.

This is just a hard drive cage. it fits into 2 5.25" bays and holds 3 drives. Don't know where you got that built in RAID function from, but it's not from this thing. Also there probably isn't a HDD capacity limit, as this thing shouldn't care how big the drive is

No no no. How did you arrive at all those conclusions?

This device doesn't do RAID or make your drives look like a single drive. See the 3 SATA ports on the back? You'll then plug 3 SATA cables into your MB and have 3 drives available, to do software RAID or whatever you want with them.

As for drive support, it says 4TB compatible which is marketing speak for "Hey, we support those new 4TB drives!", but that isn't a limitation.

no a bad deal for one of those, the only downsides to them is the fan in the back can be a bit loud

Unless you have tons of HDDs I don't see why this is needed. And if you do have a ton of them, probably should consider a different case...FAR maybe, $30 AR nah....

And another downsides to them is the pink (lady) color.
BTW, can somebody recommend any case (miro atx or atx) that can hold 12 hdd at cheap price?
Thank you.

Product page says: the BPU-230SATA series supports RAID 1 / 0 / 1+0 / 5 configurations for high performance or redundancy data applications

So it's VERY misleading thx for info. I'll edit post

This case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6811112387 is the cheapest 12+ drive case newegg has.

If 12 HDDs is something you truly need you may want to look into used server housings on eBay. If you want to get interesting with the cable management newegg has a few cases with 8x 3.5" and 3x 5.25" which could house 12 HDDs for example I am using a NZXT Source 210 for my 40TB (8 HDD) NAS. The 3x 5.25" drives are untouched and with brackets like the OP posted can fit a few more drives. I paid $25 for my case AR plus let's say $40 in brackets from this post can put you in business for under $70. Otherwise take sivadbp's advice and go with the full tower Lian li which is a nice find as well.

Reliability on this brand is dismal. I purchased 4-bay version earlier from Amazon. It sat on the shelf for couple of mounths and when I attempted to use it 1 bay was dead. iStarUSA blamed it on me and refused to process warranty repair. The brand is a total rip off and should not be allowed on SD.

If you want your drives to be hot-swappable, then this case [newegg.com] (bought for $69 AR) and 3 of this enclosure [newegg.com] (bought for $39.99) is the cheapest solution I could find when I was building my NAS. If you don't care about hot-swap, then the Lian case [newegg.com] is a good find.

I used a couple of these to build a freenas server about 6 months ago except mine were the 3 5.25 to 4 ones. Those were $20AR so this is higher but then again no one has a time machine yet. If you don't need it asap I'd monitor them (they go on sale fairly regularly) to see if this is a standard price now.

I used an old server case I had laying around. Here's a pic from when I first built it. I've since replaced the 3 silver (free after rebate) ones with a 2nd 3 5.25" to 4 3.5"

Newegg has the 2 port sata III addon cards for FAR occasionally.
