Pay $40 to go discless and get all past DLCs and the upcoming DLC included. Read the Wiki for an explanation if this does not apply to you.

PS4 Link [playstation.com]

Xbox One Link [microsoft.com]

This price is only useful for those who are trying to move to a digital copy from a disc-based copy (if you would not liked to be forced to pop the disc in for authentication every time you boot the game).

Price breakdown:
  • $30 - September DLC only.
  • $40 - "Upgrade" for those who are eligible; base game and all 4 DLCs (includes the upcoming September DLC).
  • $60 - Full game at full price; base game and all 4 DLCs (includes the upcoming September DLC).
Pictures attached as proof of conversion.

For those of us who made the unfortunate mistake of purchasing Destiny on a disc, our only option to convert to an all-digital discless copy was to re-purchase the game at full price. The original Destiny digital copies were removed from all markets, so it was $70 on Amazon (Collector's Digital Edition), or $60 on PSN/Xbox (The Taken King Legendary Edition). The regular DLC copies for $40 still requires the disc inside the drive to play, so you needed to pay for the full-priced version.

However, the "Destiny - The Collection" is coming out in September and there are two pre-orders available. One is the full retail price of $60, and the other is called the "Upgrade" option for $40. The upgrade version is for those who are moving from a legacy console (PS3/Xbox 360) to the newer console (PS4/Xbox One), but if you sign in, the upgrade version has been made available for everyone who has purchased Destiny before.

I can confirm that deleting my installation, purchasing the upgrade, removing the disc has allowed me to boot the game properly. I had the original game on disc and the DLCs purchased as well.

"Destiny - The Collection (Upgrade)" includes all of the following in a discless digital format:
  • Destiny base game (vanilla)
  • The Dark Below (December 2014 DLC)
  • House of Wolves (May 2015 DLC)
  • The Taken King (September 2015 DLC)
  • Rise of Iron (September 2016 DLC)

It says it's not available for me because I didn't purchase The Taken King, I thought this was supposed to include it

The Xbox description says "Special Offer! Destiny: The Taken King Xbox 360 owners can purchase Destiny - The Collection at a discounted price."

So, if I have the Xbox One version I can't upgrade?

Destiny is a sinking ship to be honest. Its not worth the price of admission and a lot of people are getting sick of the expensive expansion packs that hardly add any new content.

Well (and keep in mind I'm not saying whether the price is good or not) technically they are asking for a $10 conversion fee. Rise of Iron is $30. If you already own The Taken King, then you're paying $30 for Rise of Iron and $10 to convert your game.

Well the last expansion was basically an entirely new game, so that's not true. The Taken King made the game more popular, if anything. There hasn't actually been an expansion since September of 2015, and with TTK being the last expansion, I'm not 100% sure to what you're referring. There were 2 ho-hum DLCs before that, but it's not like they're shitting them out ever 2 months or something.

Destiny, like any long-form game (MMOs mostly) sees spikes in participation when new content drops then drops off when there's nothing. It'll happen with Rise of Iron just like it happened with The Taken King. It'll happen when Destiny 2 comes out next year, and it'll keep happening. It's how games like this work. This is not a special phenomenon. And Destiny has done better than most at keeping the grind relatively interesting. The free update in April that added a bunch of gear and quests and challenges was a nice thing to tide people over, and so far Rise of Iron seems to address several of the lingering concerns about the game.

I would love to convert my game to digital (all my games for that matter), but why a $10 conversion fee? What actual work are they doing to justify the fee? In addition I am super cheap and I don't buy games until they drop to below $10, so I got the original for $5.33 when it was on sale last November. I am patient, so I will probably wait for a similar sale on the new add-ons.

Well, and again no judgement of the worth of this, but you didn't buy the game on PS4 or Xbox One. You're buying a different game. Just like if you bought a game on DVD but you want the Blu Ray, or you bought the game on PS3 but you want the remaster on PS4. The PS4/Xbox One versions of Destiny are legitimately better in basically every way.

Now, depending on how you view it, you may think that because you bought the game on PS3, you should get it on PS4 for free. I don't really have an opinion on that. Bungie (or Activision) disagrees though. It's $10 to make the jump to a version of the game you don't own.
