Awesome price for these cans.
Note these are open, and very much so. People around you can hear your music clearly
Best suited for in home use.

Are any of the current Audio-Technica open models made in Japan?

Apparently the ATH-AD2000x (40mm JP)which is a favorite in the Z-Reviews has been discontinued; looks like the top end open model is now the ATH-AD1000x (53mm).

Where is the sweet spot in the Audio-Technica open line?

They all seem to have a 53mm driver. I wonder if it would be wise to hold out for an ATH-AD1000x or better yet look for a used ATH-AD2000x?

Could anyone suggest a decent set of comfortable headphones that has a removable cord so I could use a boom mic for gaming?

The Senheisser HD 558 or 598 are extremely popular for this.

I already have a BoomPro that I first used with the Monoprice headphones and now use a set of Beats Studios that I gutted and modded with a jack. Looking for a ready to go solution with comfort as a priority now now so thanks for your input. Gives me another option to look at.

Hyper X Cloud (Cloud II if you want USB sound)
Hyper X Revolver

by ready to go, I meant one I didn't have to disassemble and void a warranty to add a cable jack. Your original suggestion fits that perfectly. I am wondering about the open back on a gaming headset though. I don't want my sound to be bleeding through to other players.

I would assume that the other players would be listening to the game audio in some way...... TV sound or their own headphones, in which case the sound bleed would be a non factor.
