Could be better for some who have Dell gift cards sitting around needing to use them. Some have those in abundance.

We use these at my work. They suck.

A real dock is just a better solution. A real dock provides power to your laptop and doesn't bug out nearly as much when connecting/disconnecting.

I have this and love it. Excellent device. Allows me to just need to plug in this and my charger when my laptop is home. Good deal.

Just read this, I'm surprised. Mine works great and serves as a central hub for two monitors and three powered USB hubs as well as ethernet... I'm sure a real dock would be better but sadly they don't make them for every computer...

That's a much better deal for almost everyone. If you qualify for 6% eBay bucks its even better.

There is a small sector of peeps that have ultralights like myself that can't use a standard dock and would benefit from this. Like everything else this is not a one size fits all world. If you travel with 2 laptops one being supplied to you and one your personal an ultralight and a USB dock is the way to go for when your "home" using it as a main machine. Else I agree on standard docking stations.

Can anyone share experiences with this and a MacBook pro?

This won't power a 4K 60Hz display if anyone is wondering. If you have a laptop that can take USB-C for power (new XPS 13 for example), look for a dock that can supply power to save another plug).

Real docks are going the way of the dodo. Once they iron out the 3.1/TB3 issues it's going to be all good.
