Thread Details

Samsung S29E790C 29" 2K Ultrawide 21:9 VA Monitor

2560 x 1080 2K 4ms (GTG)
Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio 3000 : 1
VESA Mountable: 100mm x 100mm
Ergonomic Design and Height Adjustable
2 x 7W Speakers
1 x Display Port, 2 x HDMI
4ms (GTG)

Comes with free $15 Buffalo Wild Wings gift card. Pro and con there, since you won't be able to use the $15 VISA pay promo, nor your own gift cards, but this is a very good price for this monitor. Lowest I've seen recently is $400 at Best Buy and Microcenter in store only, but no store I checked for either had it in stock.

Why would you consider this over similar monitors in its price range?

First the LG 34" ones for around the same price - pixel density. The 34" LG panels at this price point are the same 2560x1080, so they won't look as clear as this one at the same viewable distance.

Comparing it to the LG 29s around this price range, the LGs are IPS panels, and not particularly great ones at that. They claim 75Hz, but you can only maybe get to that with freesync or overclocking. They only actually support 60Hz at the native resolution. The Samsung should have superior picture quality beyond that, and are generally regarded as better quality monitors than LGs.

There's also a Dell Ultrasharp in this price range. Ultrasharps are good quality monitors, but that one is IPS as well, and its response time is a lot higher, so gaming should be much better on the Samsung.

Why not a 4K instead? Well, beyond the obviously more expensive panel, you would need to buy a high end graphics card to push a 4K panel for gaming. This one, since it's just a wider res than a 1080p monitor, you should be able to push it fine without an expensive high end graphics card for games.

See my response, but again, the 34" has the same res, so it would have far worse pixel density.

It really depends on your viewing distance. I sit about a foot and a half away from my monitor. Absolutely no way I would want a 34" monitor over a 29" with the same resolution.
