own a pair Wink played w/hifiman - good cans - but to sterile for my taste (some tracks sound to the point of artificial ! laugh out loud matter of taste ! ) 650s are dynamic ! planar always win Wink

try 'em w/good dac/amp Rock !

Hmm, the HD 650 is a very strong dynamic headphone and I am not the only one who thinks it is better than this EL-8. Planar has different sound characters but far from enough to put them above dynamic ones. HD 650 with a good amp like balanced B22 can be as musical as LCD-2 paired with a good amp, the EL-8 is just over hyped, and imo not as rounded as the HD650. Wink

How do these compare to much cheaper headphones which sound just as good?

Lot of people who got 2015 model EL-8 got the bad impression of them. But new 2016 EL-8 are TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

By they way, you want to buy HD650 (250$ headphones) with AMB B22 amplifier (1100$ in Ebay) which does not make any sense. I would prefer to buy 350$ EL-8 with Chord Mojo 540$ (Sonic Electronix with 10% off)

In the previous sale, I have got EL-8 Closed (got June 26 inspected Whitebox (2016)) and these are from another league. Last week got Fostex X00 PurpleHeart for 450 (after 9 months of wait) and Can't take traditional headphones anymore after listening to EL-8. Even-though PH got more bass than EL-8 C, EL-8s are like F1 car (super speed and can hear ALL the details of music) and PH got Bass but they are like Prius(someone in chat rooms commented the same way).

Eventually returning Fostex X00 Purple Heart and keeping EL-8 Closed

I guess I don't like planar sound. I used to have all the TOTL headphone at that time (not for showing whatsoever), LCD2 HD800 SR007 Denon D7k Grado HF2 Shure 530, only the HD800 and SR007 are really different and probably "worth" the difference in price. The LCD2 and other planar cans are heavy, not comfy, not great fit and just don't have the wide sound stage, detail, liveliness/airy and the layers that dynamic cans have. I found planar headphone generally fast but not faster or even as fast as TOTL dynamic cans like HD800. Sold most of them after a few years being hard core head-fier. One day when I have more time for music, will probably get a SR009 and a good tube amp like the BHSE and be done with headphones... but maybe for the price I could just get a good Martin logan setup and "bring" the artists into my room instead lol
