One of the reasons I still lurk the SD forums after all these years is to read the comments in expensive watch threads. They always make me laugh. The same people that whine about the price of an Omega won't hesitate to spend hundreds on smart gadgets that become obsolete almost immediately after purchase. A good Swiss watch will last generations if it's well taken care of. Your Apple watch will not be worn by you next year, nevermind by your grandchildren in 50 years.

Please carry on though... tell me all about how it looks like a Timex and how nobody wears watches anymore and how for that price the case better be carved from the horn of a unicorn.
Glad you asked! Actually, there are quite a few qualities a $500 watch has that this Speedmaster doesn't!

For example, in the 1950s and 60s, Omega created the Speedmaster line to operate well IN SPACE! This meant replacing the normally mineral (i.e., glass) or sapphire crystal with hesalite (i.e., high-quality plastic), in case the crystal were to shatter and send shards of glass or sapphire everywhere. Plastic scratches and cracks, but does not shatter.

Omega also feared that a rotor (found in automatic, or self-winding watches) would not rotate properly in zero gravity, so they cut the rotor out, and used a hand-winding movement. So every day you have to spin the crown to keep your watch running.

Later they found that mineral and sapphire crystals could be manufactured in such a way that shattering into a million pieces was unlikely, and they also found that automatic watches with rotors actually function fine in space with little or no modification. However, it was too late - the moon watch pedigree had already been established, and people were actually willing to pay a lot more for a watch with fewer or worse features.

So the answer to your question is, a $500 watch from a good manufacturer like Hamilton will have better features than this Speedmaster. However, it won't have the pedigree of being "proven" in space, or the Omega branding, which are two things that push the price of this watch into the stratosphere (pun intended).

The watch is good, the band is hideous. Always wanted a manual Speedy... maybe some day.

So change the band. There are so many beautiful aftermarket bands out there that look awesome on speed masters

Hardly, for any watch connoiseur, this is 1 of the must have models of any collection. It is iconic.

This is truly an amazing deal! In for two; one as a daily and an extra for a back up. I'm actually considering getting another for my father. Thanks Opie!

Google jomashop and grey market warranty. This question crops up fairly often.

I personally wouldn't let jomashop service my watch. So take into account the cost of service at another shop.

The amount of money you guys are dropping on this watch is disturbing. Especially the guy buying three of them from what I assume is his personal yacht.
