How does RingPlus detect tethering?

I just switched my account to the RingPlus promotion BLT plan 6GB of LTE. Tethering costs $2. I am curious, how do they detect tethering? My old plan was called Leonardo 2 and I didn't even realize it but apparently it didn't have tethering, yet I was able to connect to my phone from the computer when my cable modem went down and nobody charged me or stopped me or anything.

All phones these days flag packets that are routed to a tethered device. They could also look at user agents or certain addresses in the traffic.
