I have had mine for a few months now. Its been pretty good so far. Video quality is good during the day and at night. My biggest worry besides video quality is temperature issues. I've had 2 previous dash cams die from heat in the car. I went with this one due to the reviews of video quality and temperature handling. I haven't had any issues with heat in 3 months now. It stays on the windshield all the time. Parking mode in Florida sun seems to work well so far.

Is this camera better than the newly released Viofo A119 [amazon.com]? I've seen a few reviews on the A119 and it seems pretty great for about $100.

The Viofo A119 will be easier to hide than the Vantrue R2, but I wonder how the picture quality compares.

These go for 100 often. I have 3 and I love them. Just make sure you use a good sd card or you will have issues. The 32gb one it comes with works fine.

Do you have it hard wired? The battery only lasts 30 seconds... My cig port turns off when my car turns off

I wrote the one review so far on that link so I'm not necessarily a new data point. I think there are a few other reviews on the other amazon link for a A119. But as I mentioned, I owned both the Vantrue R2 and the Viofo A119, and as for pic quality--after playing the files back on a big screen tv, I thought the pic quality was the same. If you're going to use it for a filmography, then maybe you might be more picky and view examples on youtube. I suppose a film buff might say there is always a bit of fisheye around the edges for such a wide angle. Also the file ordering system was a tiny bit simpler on the Viofo in my opinion--not a crazy number of sub folders. Another small variant (that has not been a big deal to me so far) is the Vantrue has 10+ more degrees (170 vs 160 on the viofo a119). I might add, perhaps a far more worthwhile/valuable addition to any installation I've done so far is adding a CPL if find you have a lot of glare. On our honda accord, there is little glare, but on my sportier coupe with a more slanted windshield, there is a ton. I wrote the main info email link on viofo, and someone actually wrote me back that it will be available in 3 weeks from now.

I know you're interested in the video quality the most, but for me, the main winnning points for the A119 for me was the less obtrusive installation, the really reasonably priced GPS ($10 for A119 vs $22 for the vantrue R2), and for many the capacitor battery (if you drive in a hot climate). With the Vantrue (which has a battery) the video can go on for a length of time you set after the car is turned off. With the A119's capacitor, the video just stops as soon as the key is turned off. Some may want a parking guard or monitoring camera, so the Vantrue may win in that regard, but I personally am not so interested in that. Lastly,I just had a family member on a roadtrip today and he asked if I had considered installing one of those dash cams--and i pointed out the hidden A119 behind the rear view mirror--highlight of my trip. haha. that would have never happened with the Vantrue. Smilie

I bought it from Amazon (another slick deals) back in July. It claims 2k camera but I even cannot see the driving license from the car in front of me clearly during test drive. I returned this dash cam. I don't care those additional features such as parking feature or GPS feature. To me, if I cannot see the license clearly, the dash cam is garbage to me.

Your best bet is to avoid wide-angle "fish-eye" lens e.g., 170? on the R2 here. They do a horrid job of catching license plates clearly from certain distances/angles, IMO.

Why would you need a waterproof dash cam? Plan on taking your car snorkeling?
Or maybe I'm missing the joke lol.

recently having issues with this camera after 3 months of usage... i would shut off randomly during my drive and when i tried to turn it back on, it turns off automatically. Vantrue tech support is responsive though... hopefully working it out.

only other thing i dont like about this camera is that it isnt a polarized lens... you will see your dash reflections. U can tape one on though. i havent figured out how to get it to stick though haha.

As for the license plate, you can see it imo... it does sometimes blurs when ur moving though...
