this is for hiking. I don't own one, but from what the REI told me, you might need to put it in another bag if you are checking it, otherwise the straps will get caught on the belts.

This is a backpacking pack for hikes longer than 2-3 days

I've owned this pack for several years and can't say enough good things about it. It is a very versatile pack that can accommodate weekend trips in the Smokies as well as a 7-night trip in Glacier National Park. I've used it backpacking more than 150 miles each year, and other than some signs of dirt, this pack has been bombproof for me.

When I check it for air travel, it easily fits into a zippered duffel to protect it from the baggage handlers. Two things you should know about this pack. First, it comes in different sizes to accommodate different body/ torso types. You can easily get "fitted" at any dealer that carries Osprey, or by using the measurement guide on Osprey's website. Once you have the right size, fine tuning this pack is very easy performed on the fly - very easy and flexible.

Second, the hydration bladder is sold separately .... and can be added later. Truthfully, I rarely use the bladder except in very dry conditions, preferring external bottles instead.

I own several brands of packs/volumes. ..... but the Atmos 65 is my all-around favorite. Cheers!

Also , just learned that REI will have this pack at 30% Off in their upcoming Labor Day Sale ...

If you have a small or medium frame you can get away with it but the large is too long. Also depends on how/how much you pack and the person checking you in.

Great pack! I have the 50L and think that it's a great pack. The AG suspension does a great job distributing weight. The Aether AG was showed off at Outdoor Retailer, with a release date of Spring 2017. If your looking for a ~65L backpack, I would wait for the Aether. It's a little bit beefier, so you can carry heavier loads.

I love Osprey packs. The are well designed, well built, and well priced. This is definitely a great deal.

It amazes me how porky they have gotten, though! I bought an AEther 60 a decade ago and it weighed almost a pound less than this one. The Atmos 50 was the largest Atmos back then, and it was a sub-three pound pack!

Check out the eBags Weekender bag. Largest bag that still checks on the overwhelming majority of airlines throughout the world. Ive taken mine all over the globe and it has held up fantastic, and its a purpose built bag for backpacking travel, and not hiking.

Very cool large mesh support system for excellent venting. For this price though, not too unhappy I managed to get a Volt 75 for around $140 last month

If you want a Carry On compatible bag, I recommend this one, also from Osprey.

No way. I traveled to Europe on many airlines, a standard Jansport is all that would fit. This pack is 2-3x that size
