you have to sign up for service, you can't buy it straight out. also be cautious all the sims are now coming pre-activated including the prepaid $0.99 sims that usually go on sale.

Warning, these SIM cards now come pre-activated as of a few months ago. I bought 3 of them from T-mobile a few months ago as I always do. I have a large family plan and use the Sim cards whenever we buy or change phones instead of paying a T-mobile store $20. I went to swap in a new SIM 3 weeks ago and they all showed up as previously used. Called T-mobile as I bought directly from them and they are still sealed. I confirmed with several reps and depts that ghey now self activate all sims before shipping. they did offer me a free courtesy SIM card.
