The website shows a package of Stubbs charcoal, but the item description says Cowboy charcoal. A little confusing, but I ordered some any way.

Stubbs is a natural hardwood briquette, no coal dust and very little binding agent. Though it takes a little longer to start, it burns hotter and longer with less ash and a cleaner smell.

Cowboy Charcoal makes the briquettes, they just license the name from Stubbs

This is good charcoal, but the Kingsford deals are obviously going to be better (read cheaper) and should be starting soon. For example, last years deals were as low as $0.27/lb whereas this is coming in around $0.43/lb.

Again, this is a good price for a high quality charcoal.

Yes these two or Kingsford and Stubbs should not be compared. I have used both and of course Kingsford is cheaper both in price and quality (if that is what you want). Believe me I usually buy Kingsford and it hurts the wallet less. But this is higher quality and will cost more. So, pick what works best for you; or mix and match.

I find it doesn't burn as long but does burn much hotter. Better for grillin IMO. For slower cooks it could be a tossup.

Stubbs burned longer than Kingsford, second only to Royal Oak, in this briquette comparison by the Sweet Home [thesweethome.com]

Less ash for slow cooks is a big plus in favor of Stubbs
