Being a military spouse has its many challenges. One of the challenges is trying to feed your family on a limited income. I thought it would be helpful to the many of us SD'rs out there that are military or military spouses to have an official Deca/ Commissary thread. There are so many great deals and YMMV by store, but at least here you may be able to look for a deal that you might not have known about before. I HTH someone save a little for thier family!! Enjoy! Today at Fort Lewis:
There was a table at the front of the store with stacks of coupons expiring 12/31. I saw lots around the store too, way more than usual here.


Craisins are still 1.29- no coupons though. Frown
King Arthur flour went WAY up,

Fisher Pecans were marked down to $3.98 for a pound, and I had some $1/1 Qs from one of the earlier Commissary coupon fliers, $2.98 /pound for pecan halves!
There are $.55/1 coupons around for these as well. I'll put them in the freezer so they'll keep better.
I also got some slivered Almonds, I think 10 oz packages, for $1.82 before the coupons. They also had sliced almonds for the same price.

Salada tea, iced tea 14 packs were .44 ea.

Celestial Seasonings holiday teas (pumpkin spice, gingerbread, sugar cookie) were $1.04 and I had some $1/1 insert MQs.

Vitamin D is still cheap.

Reach floss is still .84 so MM with the $1 IP.

Not sure it's a great price, but 750 ct Q-tips were 2.99 and they had $.50/1 military Qs on the shelf.

Omg, so glad I read this thread today. Got the skillet the other day and it was driving me crazy trying to figure out why it was sent to me. Totally forgot about this contest. Was feeling a little uneasy about using it but now I can put it to good use with no worries. Thanks for the heads up on the contest.

Yes..but at your base that will just be step 1.
Step 1 - put the coupons out.
Step 2 - let the patrons use the coupons.

Step 2 will be the hard one. They probably know that -- If we put the coupons out then people will start trying to USE them....

As for me... I am going to stock up on cracker barrel cheese and smuckers goober chocolate. A person can't need much more than that...except maybe some crackers...

Went to the base today. I got some things. Had a rude cashier. I think customer service is going downhill again since Sara left. Frown

The cashier was all snarky with me. First I reached in my pocket to get my ID - and I pulled out a bunch of coupons. I had put the coupons in that pocket as I bought the items. But when I put my coupons up on the counter I said "I think I am going to have...." and the cashier finished my sentence and said "A whole bunch of EXTRA coupons...."

???? No. I didn't have EXTRA coupons. I had coupons for the items I purchased.

Then he asked "Are you going to write a check for your purchase?" I said "No." He said "Are you going to use a credit card?" I said "No." So he asked me how I was going to pay...
Confused Are they supposed to ask you that before they even scan your items??

So I told him I was going to pay with my coupons and vouchers.

He said "We'll SEE..."

I said "We'll see what?" He said "We'll see what it comes to..."

Confused

So I put a stack of vouchers on the counter and said "I think I have it covered."

Then he starts with my Keebler cookies coupons. I had four of them - and four boxes of cookies.

He said "Did you even GET these???" Then he told me he was having to push ALL my coupons through... (yet he had just started scanning my coupons).. and that he hadn't remember scanning any cookies.

I told him of course I got them - but he could look through my sacks.

Then my nature made coupons wouldn't scan. (Who would have thunk it....) He was waving his scanner all over them. I told him they never do scan. So he did put those in manually.

Then I had 8 $2 reach coupons left (they are from some flyer long ago...) I had 8 reach floss - which were the LAST things he had scanned. And he said "Did you even GET these??? I don't remember scanning any."

I once again told him that he could look through my bags.

I really don't mind if they have to check the register tape. And I don't mind if they ask if I am sure I got the right kind or something.." But his "Did you even GET these?" remark was wearing on my patience.

So he went and got someone from customer service to finish my order. That was fine with me. I was getting tired of his snarling anyway. When she came out I told her that he had been rude - and she told me that he was one of their "best" workers.

Then he was standing at the end of the counter with his arms crossed yelling "I was just doing my job ma'am!" EEK!

THAT is a good worker??? When someone from customer service has to intervene because the cashier and the patron are not getting along - is the appropriate thing for the cashier to do to:

1. Leave the area and let customer service handle it

or

2. Stand at the end of the lane with their arms crossed yelling at the patron.

I think it should be 1.

But despite the fact the customer service person saw him do that (though she did tell him to leave once I pointed out that just wasn't right for him to stand there and do that) she still kept telling me he was "just doing his job."

No. His job is to check people out And if he has to verify coupons, his job is to do that in a way that is not demeaning to the customer.

I really miss Sara. Frown

Sorry you had a snarky cashier and CS rep. I would also think that someone that works in customer service would know better than to defend an employee when a customer complains. Isn't it much better to apologize for any misunderstanding and leave it be??


I just wanted to remind everyone that the old vouchers expire 12.31.12. I know the commissary said they would honor them after that date but the commissary has really gone downhill, IMO, as far as looking out for it's patrons. So I say use 'em if you have 'em.


Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year! hug

Wow, that's horrible. Haven't been in a couple weeks not looking forward to going back If my coupons weren't expiring I'd probably wait a little while longer.

Yeah. I think I am going to cash mine out. I think I have about 20 left.
When I got mine they said they would be good for five years. But they even said 12.31.2012 at that time. And I just got them a couple of years ago. When they stopped selling them, they said they would still be good 5 years from the date of purchase. And they told me that each voucher is scanned and they know when it was purchased.

BUT everyone at my base keeps telling me they expire 12.31.2012. When I mention they are good for 5 years, they look at me like Confused

I have asked if I can buy gift cards with them and they said no.

So I guess I will buy 20 packs of gum, one pack at a time, and get cash back for them.

I will use what I can for groceries, but I am not just going to buy a bunch of stuff in order to use them.

I think they will work for gift cards... but I am not going to argue with them about it. If they would rather give me cash than let me buy gift cards who am I to argue that point....

Before they had gift cards they used to have $25 vouchers. They were supposed to be good five years from the date of purchase, but the vouchers have 12.31.2012 as an expiration date printed on them. So we are not trusting them to remember that they were SUPPOSED to be good for five years.

Actually, most of the cashiers there are very nice. But I am not used to shopping there as much and so I don't know a lot of them, and they don't know me.

But this cashier definitely had a coupon issue. He was determined from the start that he was going to "catch" me at something.

I do know that the current head of CS is not near as coupon friendly as the former one. The current head was the head before Sara. And things were different then. When the supervisor isn't quite coupon "friendly" you will notice a lot more flack from certain cashiers who think it is okay to be less than courteous people who use a lot of coupons.

I don't really mind them doing what they have to do to verify the items for the coupons - As.long.as.they.are.polite.about.it.

I do mind them being rude.

At one point he told me he didn't want to look through my bags, he just wanted me to answer him honestly and with integrity. Confused

A polite "Are you sure you got the right thing, because these aren't scanning?" would solicit a honest response. (The $2 reach coupons never did scan right...but they did say $2 off ANY reach floss - and had a picture of the floss).

But asking "Did you even GET these???" with an attitude - That is not the manner in which I like to be treated.

I got a bit spoiled for a while there. Quite a few cashiers and CS people told me that Sara had told them that I knew my coupons, and I used them correctly, so to not hassle me about them. She knew I was straight with my coupons.

So having to listen to a cashier get all snippy with me about my coupons, and then be told that he was only "doing his job" didn't sit well with me. I was hoping I was beyond that.

My commissary is closed every Sunday and Monday but they're actually going to be open today (NY Eve). I'm shocked. I bet the cashiers are going to be pissy though. laugh out loud

My commissary was open regular hours today. That surprised me! I know the website said they would be - but lots of times they just post a sign in the store. So I made sure to get out there before 4 pm.

I had a better cashier today. He actually asked if I bought some of the items, but he was nice about it. Geez... the coupon for the taco kits that I peeled OFF THE BOX didn't want to scan.

When he looked at my Nature Made coupons, he scurried off without saying a word. He came back without my coupons. I mentioned that I had been planning to use them. He told me that they THOUGHT they were copies. Then he told me they were copies. I told him they were not copies - but I remained respectful and he remained respectful about it. I think he is kind of new - and seemed a bit nervous. I really don't mind them checking things out if they need to. I do mind being accused of things.

So the CS person was over talking to the CS supervisor, whispering about the coupons. She turned around and pointed at me. I smiled and waved. And she approved them. We have had "issues" about her calling my coupons copies before. So I was glad we didn't this time. But I wonder if they would have approved them for someone else... someone who wouldn't stand their ground on the copy issue. I can't even believe that the nature made coupon is even being questioned at this point... like they have never seen it before. The funny thing is that I got a new printer, printed these in color - and they actually looked nice (compared to my black and white fast draft coupons I usually take). I was proud that my coupons actually looked nice for a change... and it was the FIRST time anyone ever questioned they were copies....lol
