it's an excellent projector for this price and only con is this projector doesn't have MHL feature like what Epson 2045 offers....it may not recognize casting devices like chromecast or Roku....is this assumption correct?? any comments??

This is a killer projector at this price. It is still a fairly mid range projector for home theater, but for under $1000 you are getting a lot.

I'm in the market for a projector and not 100% sure if I want to spend the $3k for a 4k projector.

I was leaning towards the epson 3500 for around $1000 but saw this deal.

I see the MSRP is higher than the 3500 but all reviews say that the 3500 is the replacement for this and is a better projector.

is the 3500 worth the extra $300?

True, looks like it doesn't have MHL.

Do you really need MHL functionality?

If you have Audio Video Receivers (AVR) than I don't think you are going to use MHL functionality.

What you are getting for this price point is amazing quality in terms with of the video.

Need to check out the difference on these I guess. Seems like a deal today.

Was going to pickup the 5030, but now I might have to check out the 5040. But...as this would be my first time getting a projector, is the 5030/40 a major upgrade over this one today?

I agree, probably wouldn't need the MHL for myself.

My thought is whether or not to purchase this older projector, the newer 3500 or just spend major green on the 4k projector.

FYI, the $3k projectors like the Epson 5040UB are not true 4k but are instead 1080p with 'pixel-shifting':

imho, yes. Lens shift, better PQ. Is it worth the extra money? That depends on your disposable income, and where you plan to install the projector. The 5040 adds pseudo 4k, and HDR. I think that alone may be worth the upgrade. But again, that depends on your budget. The benefits of 4k is actually noticeable on large screens used for projectors. HDR is awesome on any screen!

True (native) 4k projectors are still very expensive. I think the cheapest one (from sony) is around $8K.
the $3k range projects with 4k in their spec sheet are just 1080p projectors with pixel shifting technology.

As someone who owns a 5040UB on a 15' screen, I say who cares. The picture quality with a 4K source and HDR is absolutely amazing. I have seen it side by side with a $10K Sony 4K and I would take the Epson every time. JVC actually has a better overall picture for movies (slightly), but the input lag took it out of consideration for me. I like to play games as well.

How does this compare to the benq ht1080?

I prefer the benq dlp picture. I'd get the benq 2050 over this projector any day.

and for anyone wondering... 5030/40 has better black lvls and more accurate colors than this 3020. For a better understanding, take a look at wirecutter, they do a decent job of explaining.
