How to block iPad from EVERYTHING except 1 site and a printer?

Novakingwai 2,146 263 August 31, 2016 at 11:21 AM
I need to set up and ipad for work that only has access to 1 site. It can't be allowed to visit any other sites or open any apps. It would also need to print wirelessly.

I have 2 printers. One is HP Laserjet Pro M402N. It is connected to an ethernet network. The other is a Brother HL-4570CDW. Would it be possible to print through a wired network or does it have to have a wireless printer?

Easiest/Cheapest option requires a Mac and a copy of Apple Configurator https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/a...6344?mt=12

If no mac, you'd be looking at one of the MDM service providers like MasS360, SOTI, MobileIron, JAMF, AirWatch, or Microsoft InTune

You can also experiment with parental control restrictions but they may not do enough.

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?
Have you ever stopped to think the long-term GOP immigration policy might be to make the United States of America a less desirable place to live than Mexico?

Bushel by JAMF allows you to manage 3 devices for free and is probably a good option for you.https://www.bushel.com/

Web restrictions could also be enforced externally at a network level. No problem printing to a printer via wired ethernet.

Guided access works but can be bypassed. It does work well for toddler proofing.

Maybe if you pin that website to your homescreen, open it and then turn on guided access. If you force the ipad to reboot you can easily bypass guided access.

Honestly I think guided access is a bit too simple for your needs. But it could be part of the solution. Give Bushel a try.

I have Bushel setup and the MDM setup on the ipad. now how can I disable everything except the Safari browser and only allow it to use 1 or 2 pages?

I haven't actually used bushel, I found it when I was trying to get a list of mdm providers for you. Do some searching, you'll probably find an answer.
If you haven't, read this: http://resources.jamfsoftware.com...ness.pdfit may not be as capable as some of the products you have to pay for. While you may not have a mac, give the manual for apple configurator a read. It should give you and idea of the things that are possible on iOS.

It's possible to create home screen icons for a specific webpage. That might be one option.

I'm sure you could use your own nameserver and proxy, but you probably want a simpler option. There may be some parental control apps that would work but they may block access to local resources on your network.

The price was right... $0. Sorry should have made that clearer. Again, I don't use it but as an example Microsoft's InTune is $6/device/month.

I haven't had to lock down an iPad in a long time, last time I did I was able to use Apple's Configurator (lots of people complain this is apple's buggiest piece of software). Ultimately it's going to require some trial and error on your part to figure out what works for you. Not 100%, but it looks like configurator can do some things the other options can't. Guided access is the simplest (but can be bypassed) if you never need to leave a particular app (for a single website you'll need to add that web page to the homescreen: http://lifehacker.com/5809338/add...homescreen)

This comparison of mdm vendors is 2 years old, but may still be helpful:

Try Guided Access. It's built-into the iOS.
