Classic View no longer works

NoRulesJustRight 250 108 August 31, 2016 at 05:07 PM
Classic View suddenly stopped working tonight. I see "updated site" view whether I use the Classic View link or the standard one that appears when I'm not signed in. I cleared my browser cache, cookies, logged out, logged back in...but I can't get the Classic View back no matter what I do.

I cannot work with the "updated view" for the store pages; to be frank, it is intolerable. The deal blocks are way too large to manage efficiently and effectively. The redesign requires way too much scrolling and the deals are harder to read and comprehend quickly because they each consume significantly more space on the screen.

How do I get Classic View back? The link to Classic View isn't working for me.

Which link are you using? You can always click on the bottom right of the page to get back to classic view.

( I'm not staff, and no clue if there's an actual site issue though. )

Yes, that's the one I tried using, bottom right of some pages, labeled "Classic View". In order to see that link, I have to first click a link to the newer view. After clicking the "Classic View" link, a link to "Updated site" at the top and "Redesign View" on bottom left appears. The labels on applicable links in header and footer alternate, depending on the active view. When in [what used to be] classic view, there are links to the newer design view, and vice versa.

Other than the labels on those links, there is now no noticeable difference between the two versions -- they both look like the redesigned, newer view.

I just switched from classic to redesign and back to classic and everything is fine. I would notice straight away if I got stuck with redesign.

Try this link.

Ahh sounds like something weird going on there. I'd add which browser and version to the OP since Devs will probably need to recreate it if there's not a all around issue.
Try another browser, and check if you added any new extensions or addons too. I had one addon really mess the site up on me.
Good luck, hopefully can get it sorted out .

Here's the specific page for others to help troubleshoot and verify, if interested:

When I use this link below, which is the only page I normally use here, I see the new redesign as of tonight. There is a link at the bottom to "Redesign View". That fact implies I should be in Classic View. But what I see is the same as what I see when I click the "Redesign View" link. Back and forth, the list of Amazon deals looks the same in both views.

http://slickdeals.net/coupons/amazon/

I am using Safari, no change in add-ons, extensions, etc.

Edit: I just confirmed the same issue occurs in Firefox.

Oh that's part of the new coupons pages I believe. It changed on both classic and redesign. I didn't notice it till now either. And I agree , don't really care for it.

Yes, they seemed to have changed the coupon page and removed the portion with the "forum listings" per store. Any other way to get these back other than creating a new filter? That link was a must for me..

This is now my question as well. Using a filter in the Forums for Store=Amazon doesn't resurrect the thumbnails of the products for each posted deal. I can click "Deals and Sales" on the left side of the Coupons page but those blocks are excessively obtrusive on my laptop screen.

I agree. Can't get the same content to show up. What a step backwards.

Hi everybody, we are running some tests on these pages where some Classic users will see an updated layout, a'la Redesign. This is something we are trying to explore because those old Classic store pages have some very old, creaky code supporting them and they tend to break often. It's really tough to keep multiple versions maintained indefinitely.

I'd love to get your feedback (anything else in addition to what's already in this thread Smilie ) on how it affects your usage of these pages and what's missing so we can update and bring things back where it makes sense.

Snipes007, what are the "forum listings" you mention? Is that the list at the bottom of the Classic store pages that would just show all deals tagged with the store? If so, on the new store page layout, if you select "deals & sales" and sort by "newest deals" does that come close (aside from the layout) to showing the same content you expect?

If I may respond to this as well, I can say no, because the blocks (cell containers per item/deal record) are exponentially too large, resulting in significantly fewer deals per screen, requiring excessive scrolling and thus taking far more time to digest the deals than what was previously possible in classic view.

To put it more succinctly, in the current "redesign" format, I "can't see the forest for the trees".

The "trees" are so zoomed in so close, "in-your-face" in a manner of speaking, that I can't see the "forest" (list), and I have to resort to evaluating merely a couple trees, where I used to be able to digest several, given the same time frame.

This discourages me from even trying to look because it's too cumbersome and time consuming, a step backwards, as another respondent mentioned.

I'm trying to evaluate different pages on the site using filters; so far this link below is the best I've been able work out for now. It actually works better for me in the newer redesign view, but it cuts up the list into shorter pages than the preferred store page in Classic View and doesn't work as well for me as the old store page, as it was before the change which prompted this thread, due to all the extraneous clutter on the pages in this link:

I agree, the item blocks are way too large. It's very hard to distinguish what is actually a deal. I believe the best thing would be to just go back and re-write the Classic View code.

Okay, thanks for that feedback. Just making sure I'm not missing any bugs in the actual functionality. The issue is definitely the layout and the size of each row, but the content is okay?
