¢ (cents) symbol displays as ? in [quote] block & causes other mayhem

Gromit 1,865 2,286 September 1, 2016 at 07:50 PM
Updated (and condensed):

¢ (cents) symbol displays correctly in the main body of a post, but gets changed to ? when inside a [quote] block with a username

Example in quote w/o username:
Quote :
48¢ (cents) symbol
Fails in the other post here:
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=88856443&postcount=369

Both of the above cents symbols in this bug report post cause weird mangling of a link like this: re [uot;http] Yucko.

The above line with 'noparse' tags:
Both of the above cents symbols in this bug report post cause weird mangling of a link like this: [URL="http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=88856443&postcount=369"]here[/URL] Yucko.

With username ("=Gromit"):
Quote from Gromit :
48? (cents) symbol
With username & link to a post ("=Gromit;88856443"):
Quote from Gromit View Post :
48? (cents) symbol
(and that link is sometimes broken; haven't quite figured out when)

I'm typing the cents symbols using the ALT-0162 key code. That worked without problems in many posts here on SD over the past many years.

Tested using "Classic" view, with Pale Moon browser on Windows 10. Same problems in redesign view, and with MS Edge browser (in both Classic and redesign).

Problem appears to happen to whatever is the first BB code thing after the first cents symbol:

¢

Quote with username ("=Gromit"):
Quote from romit] :
8? (cents) symbol
Then the next BB code thing is OK:

Quote with username ("=Gromit"):
Quote from Gromit :
48? (cents) symbol

I've only tried cents, but I'm guessing other similar ALT codes (such as degrees symbol) will cause the same problems.

ADDED:

365° burning down the house

(ALT 0176)

Attached screen shot of post #1, to show how I'm seeing things.

I hovered the mouse pointer on the mangled link (where "here" became "re") to show the resulting bad URL -- at the bottom of the capture ("http://uot;http//slickdeals...").

Interesting. When I view the page source, the ones I entered show in the source as the actual symbols (cents or degrees). The source for the ones in your post initially appeared as "& # 1 6 2 ; " (without the spaces).

Typing that code here without the spaces: ?

The first time I did a preview, that displayed as the cents symbol, and in my edit box the decimal code became the symbol too. Page source on that showed the same "& # 1 6 2 ; " string as yours.

However, subsequent previews changed all of them in this post (yours and mine) to "?". Page source now showing "?" too (for the ones in this post that I'm composing here, not your own post).

Don't think too much about it. It's most likely a parser error for [referenced quotes] since it seemed to have saved the char correctly. If you click on "Edit" it still shows up as Cents instead of ?.

Wonder if this is related to another issue I reported, where site was improperly parsing urls together...

All of the ones in my previous post were gone starting from the time I did the 2nd preview. They're all now plain ?'s. Editing that post doesn't bring back the cents.

Tried it again here:
? (typed as "& # 1 6 2 ;" without spaces)

First preview: I see the cents symbol in the preview and the message edit box.
Second preview: Preview became a ?. Still cents symbol in edit box.
Save message: Displays as ?.
Edit again, I see the cents symbol in the edit box. This did not happen with my previous msg.

I think this may be a related question

This:
CBS The Talk Giveaways [cbs.com]
Code:
http://www.cbs.com/shows/the_talk/giveaways/
shows fine and in in this post, posted yesterday, but 2 posts down, the same copy/pasted text shows as broken.

Also seeing broken links that used to be fine in older posts by MLx3

Rules links (at the bottom of the post(s):

Twitter link:

What's causing this and why is it popping up now?

In your post with the broken link (#118 in the CBS The Talk Giveaways thread), the offending character is the right single quote/apostrophe in "world's". When you replace that with the normal straight kind -- ' -- that you can type on a keyboard, the link no longer gets garbled.

I suspect the bug in the first MLx3 thread (baby shopping spree) is caused by the circle-R symbol (registered trademark). The other threads have similar "fancy" characters (e.g., left and right double quotes).

Just a suggestion. Checking the logs,

on 8/9/16 SweetestDeals reported a bug here. Which is not a bug, more of a user error.

on 8/21/16 whovian replies here.

Meanwhile we'll see about resolving that issue, sounds like an edge case Smilie
(Couldn't play video, not too sure what he's referring to...)

On 8/29/16: Schooby reports: "A fix has gone out for this.. "

On 9/1/16: Gromit reported this error.

Whatever they did to "fix" that may have caused this bug to start cropping up.

Can someone tell me what the problem/offending character is in this post:

Hasn't been edited since Jan and all of a sudden the links busted.

Are you talking about post #1 in that thread? I'm not seeing any broken links. What specifically is wrong?
