This configuration is similar to the ASUS X555DA deal out right now (+75 thumbs up as of this posting), so check this out if you're looking at that model as well.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...-_-Product

AMD A10-8700 APU with RadeonTM R6 Graphics (1.8 GHz, up to 3.2 GHz, 2 MB cache, 4 cores)
16GB DDR3L 1600MHz RAM
1TB SATA Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW SuperMulti DL; DVD-ROM
15.6-inch High-Definition Anti-glare LED Backlit Display (1366 x 768),
HD Webcam, HDMI, VGA
802.11b/g/n Wifi
1x USB 3.0 Port, 2x USB 2.0 Ports, 1x RJ-45 Port Ethernet, SD card reader, Bluetooth
Windows 10; 4-Cell Lithium-ion with up to 6 hrs Battery Life

The difference between the two on the hardware front is that this machine swaps in another 8GB of RAM at the expense of the SSD (which isn't the best trade IMO) and has reduced resolution (ugh!). However, as an owner of several similar HP devices, you'll have arguably better build quality, a TPM (bitlocker if you upgrade to Win10 Pro), a better keyboard (less flex, etc), physical buttons for the mouse, a removable battery, better battery life, removable covers to access HDD/RAM, etc.

I looked at the two and went with the HP instead of the Asus and added my own SSD. It came out $75 more but considering that I'm not beholden to a dead battery and it's more serviceable it was worth the difference. This is a gift for my mother so I'm not as down on the lower resolution.

The A10-8700Ps are GREAT APUs and by adding an SSD in addition to the beefy RAM, this thing will fly. Be aware that NewEgg charges tax in some areas. This is at least $15.00 cheaper than competitors, and you can use the usual tricks to get a few bucks back from NewEgg. This item also has double eggpoints as a bonus.

Does it have two hard drive bays? Such that I can add an SSD while still using the 1tb?

You'd have to pull the optical and put in a hard drive bay for that....

@OP looks like the external resolution can be set higher... am I correct?

Yes, the external resolution can go much higher. It's just the TN panel that's 720P Smilie
