Note that this warranty is not provided by Crucial/Micron. These are old drives that, to my knowledge, they don't even make anymore. Should SHTF you'll be dealing with this 3rd party seller, assuming they're still around. I also suspect these are actually refurbs...

You are correct. Per Crucial's website:
The Crucial M500 SSD is a legacy product and is no longer available.

These look like the ones that were on sale on crucial website last year but were refurbished.

This the OEM variation of the Crucial M500.

My concern is that the seller would be providing the warranty.

A mechanical drive.. eh.. bit of a gamble.. a crucial SSD? I mean unless the drive is bad from the start its either going to work or not. They look like a semi-reliable place, and one that deals with only hard drives. So its safe to say the drive is going to be fully wiped and tested with at least a smart reading program before they ship it. Unless they don't pad it at all in a 12x12x12 box I think you'll probably be ok..

The problem with refurb SSD's is the amount of usage on them.

For an MLC drive at this price, it is a killer deal. It might not perform like the latest drives on paper and in tests, but you won't be able to feel the difference between 0.65 second and 0.70 second difference between a newer drive and this one. The drive also has built-in buffer that will save all your data before the power is lost.

Is this going to be the best price for 480GB or is it going to drop more for black friday? I'm a little unsure about the warranty.

I bought a 1TB Micron M550 about a year ago for $160 and it has been rock solid. The chance of failure at this point other than some freak accident is very low. I'd buy an older MLC drive with good quality synchronous or toggle NAND way before I bought any of the newer TLC drives with an SLC cache. Performance consistency is more important in an SSD than absolute peak performance. This drive will outperform most every other drive at this price in this metric.

why does it say 32 layer V-NAND in description? I thought M500 was released with planar MLC

edit: never mind, this model number should be 20nm MLC, according to this datasheet: https://www.micron.com/~/media/do..._5_ssd.pdf

My M500 I got refurbished from crucial last year has just gone bad. Its speeds are sporadic and system locks up when I try to write in it. I'm backing it up now. Perhaps I should get another as this is new and is cheaper than when I bought it refurbished.

Is it in a PC or laptop? If it's a PC try changing the SATA cable. I had this issue before and it turned out to be a bad SATA cable. (New SSD was giving the same issue)

It's a PC, I never thought sata cables could go bad. I'll give it a try.
