Thread Details

Hope this is going in the right forum, I have been in the market for a 4k rig for the last 2 years (off and on) I've seen some deals come and go but I think this year is the one. What do you all expect to see as far as powerful 4k gaming laptop this holiday season?

What IM looking for:

4k
GTX 1060+
Form factor (15"~)

Same here... cheaper than I'd have expected, too. Not that I'd spend near two grand on an "Eluktronics" laptop...

I thought you were being sarcastic but nope, that is actually the name of the company. Wow.

looks like we all learned something today. it's been a great day guys. lets pack it up and head home.

but I'd go with a name brand laptop over some company that can't spell electronics right.
https://amzn.com/B01IS33OLC (msi, 2x the ram 4x the SSD no spinner hd) 60WHr battery can't possibly last long for gaming. I'm not sure a laptop is worth having if it only can last 2 hrs in "normal" mode.

Battery life is paltry (but this was also expected). Provides about 2 hrs in normal mode doing standard tasks, about an hour gaming.

I travel a lot for work so for me, paying a premium to plug in a 4k gaming laptop is better than hauling around a tower. Like most people on this site I'm not incredibly worried about spending the money, I'm worried that 2 months from now my same new computer is selling for 30% less.

that makes sense.

I'd wait for cyber Monday or the after xmas giftcard sale then. you might be able to get a deal, or at least something off or free. if you want a 1060/1070 chip, i wouldn't expect much of a drop for a good 6 months. its the latest round from Nvidia so there isn't anything to push the price down dramatically.

but you know how it is, you never know when it comes to computers.

I'd almost wonder if you would be better served by traveling with a Steam box & monitor and a standard laptop. Or if you're staying in hotels where you could plug the Steam box into the TV, skip the monitor too.

Why the desire for 4k rather than a more standard resolution? You would get a lot more bang for your buck and 4k on a small screen like that seems excessive. There isn't a big market for it. I'm curious as to why you want it.

Iagree
A lot more stress on a portable GPU pushing that many pixels.

As for why 4k, Short answer is I want to spoil myself. I pulled the trigger on a refurb Alienware 17" 4k 980m and fell in love, but then it died within a week. Long answer is I want this laptop to stay modern(ish) for as long as possible, when I first went to college I spent ALOT of money on a laptop in the hopes that I wouldn't be chasing a refresh after a year or two and it worked for over 6 years. Also with Laptop vs Desktop performance converging I'm anticipating this next machine can take me to the next big tech improvement.

look for something with a 10 series GPU then.. they don't have a mobile version of the chip, its a desktop chip that will be undervolted slightly.. Plus if you are trying to buy something that will last a long time, why would you look at last gen GPU's..

That's pretty much a guarantee though, unless you go for highest tier (980s kept their price for a while right? not sure). Even then though places like Dell Outlet means someone will be able to pick up a return at discount. Focus more on the spoiling yourself bit nod lol.
