This or an i7-6700k? Typically I only upgrade every 5+ years, so this will need to last for a while. I don't do much gaming, but it will be my work PC and currently my CPU is often pegged at 100% while I wait for it to complete its tasks. I don't mind OCing the 6600k, but I'd spend the extra $90 for the 6700k if it's that much better.

For gaming only.. 6600k is fine... but if you're going to be doing some video edited/rendering/streaming or stuff that would benefit multiple cores go for the 6700k. It really depends on what your budget is and if the cost/benefit ratio works out for you.

No rendering/CAD or anything like that. Both have 4 cores, but the 6700 has hyperthreading so it's a bit more efficient. Plus it runs at a higher stock clock.

What about the warranty? Is that going to give me an issue with Intel since I am buying from Ebay.

Whenever you have the budget and going to use for a long time go reasonably overboard. 6700k seems to be a reasonable one. That's been my mantra so far and been very happy with my 6700k. Cheers!!!!

quite simply the difference is in hyperthreading. both are 4 core cpus. some multicore programs will operate faster on an i7

with gaming it's less clear. some games need a high frequency single core and a fast i3 can beat a slower i7. with games that use multicore if the i5 and i7 are at the same speed usually they are within 1-2 frames of each other.

it's kind of a judgement call on if you feel the i7 is worth more. since it's always $$$ i would rather have a 6600k and a 1070 vid card than a 6700k and 1060 vid card. and cost is similar. from a gaming perspective that i5/1070 combo will out frame the i7 combo all day everyday

Is the G-sync monitor neccessary for the 1070? Cuz that will kill the budget.
