I recall from comments on the i7 HP Pavillion 15t post a few weeks ago that the 960M gpu only came with 4gb ddr5- is that true or is this a different type of 960m?

This 960m comes with 2GB. From the benchmarks I've seen, it doesn't matter if it's 2 or 4, makes almost no difference in performance. The 960m isn't meant for resolutions above 1080 really. It's still a pretty swell gaming card for a laptop, and these specs are good overall.

the 960m can come with either 2 or 4 gb of gddr5. i'm not sure i would pay extra for 4gb, if given the option.

Not reqired. 960M is not a very powerful card to utilize 4GB Frame buffer and sometimes the 4GB version performs sightly lower than 2GB version. You may get benefit if you are plaing over 1080P resolution but the GPU is again will not be providing playable frame rates at QHD or UHD resolution. So paying extra for 4GB is worthless basically.

Wish I could justify grabbing one of these...

Even with new cards around the corner, this is tempting. Would be cool to throw a 2nd SSD in the DVD-RW slot.

This doesn't have thunderbolt right? Wondering about future-proofing with external graphics cards.

Comparing this with Dell i7559 ($780 on Amazon); how good is this one? Can't find enough reviews. Anyone has any experience with this one?
Specifically looking for screen reviews when compared to Dell's IPS

The screen is a TN panel screen and not comparable with XPS series. It is good for gaming but not for professional works like Content Creation of Photo Editing.

I believe he was referring to Inspriron, not XPS.

He mentioned that comparing it with XPS. Since you have brought Inspiron, it has IPS panel as well, but not as good as XPS.
