Random question: Does this support higher framerate than 60hz? Displayport can support past 120hz. I'm guessing it's 60hz which is still great.

Looks like a solid product though!

There are USB 3.0 to HDMI adapters that sell for <$20 on eBay. Any difference between those and this product other than the connection?

I bought a USB to HDMI few days ago. it is not suitable for gaming but it is fine for watching video/ stream, and surfing web.you need at least 8gb ram to run smooth . I bought it from amazon due to the better return policy, but my second monitor tends to random flash black screen for 2 second. I am not sure if it is defective.

As usual, I doubt that any SDer paid anywhere near $99 for this. Unless you need a higher resolution, this Belkin USB 3.0 Port to DisplayPort Adapter (B2B052) [amazon.com] will suffice for most users and is only $15 at Amazon.

be aware that a product like this or anything similar will either not support at all or not support sufficiently hardware acceleration. this is essentially a software adapter to add an extra display. you won't be able to play games on this screen nor watch videos that are hardware decoded. everything must run through the cpu, which means low refresh rate, "odd" behavior, and the bandwidth will be shared with other, possibly all, usb or usb 3.0 devices plugged into the pc.

do not think this will be the same experience as plugging another monitor directly into a video port

I have a question i have a USB to HDMI. the second screen will flash black and then go back to normal in few second. is it due to high CPU usage?? I have an i3 Alienware alpha.

I'm certain it is a firmware compatibility issue. Either upgrade your USB adapter firmware/driver or upgrade your monitor firmware.

USB video adapters are so terrible. At my company we have a few cheap laptops with just 1 video output so we need to use USB adapters. they cause so many issues so we've decided we won't buy any computers without at least 2 native video outputs or 1 DisplayPort output since that natively supports multiple monitors over one port.

It may be due to high CPU usage but it could just be how flaky these things are. I dont recommend the technology in general. These devices have their own video adapter inside to drive the monitor. Considering a true video adapter is integrated into a $100+ CPU or $100+ GPU operating with direct access to system or video ram, the limitations are quickly noticeable and plain viewable.

Thanks for pointing out this alternative! I snagged the last Amazon Warehouse adapter for $13.50 - $1 Prime shipping credit. I need this or similar to drive a third display from my Intel NUC if I can't get displayport daisy-chain to work well on my three Dell U2415. Here is a reference if anybody else out there is in my boat:
