Lots of hoopla around the announcement of the iPhone 7 and associated upgrade “deals”. I understand the excitement.

This post is for those who have a single line of service with an MVNO like Straight Talk (my situation).

Most (all?) of the recent iPhone 7 deals involve what is essentially a 24-month contract. I hate multi-year commitments (apart from the ones I made to the US Navy and to my dear spouse each several decades ago). The additional cost of service directly from one of the “big” carriers seems to wipe out the credit they give you for trading in your phone (in my case a 16GB iPhone 5c).

Yes, there is tax for some.
Yes, Discover will get you 5% off (after your credit posts).
Yes, Discover offers Extended Warranty protection.

Here is the outline:
(1) Buy a new iPhone 6S 32GB (any color) directly from Apple with your Discover CC.
(2) Move over your Straight Talk T-Mobile or ATT&T nano-SIM to the new phone.
(3) Sell you your old phone for whatever you can get ($50? $75? for an Excellent-condition used 5c).

For me: $549 base plus $48.04 CA Tax less $29.85 Discover credit less $50 for used iPhone 5c = $517.19 for a new 32 GB iPhone 6S with a 2 year Warranty (Discover Extended Warranty) and no commitment.

My average Straight Talk service over the last year has averaged less than $26/month (yes, a SlickDeal).

Not for everyone certainly, but for some – a true Slickdeal.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

So what exactly is the deal here? The new retail price for an iPhone 6s or Straight Talk service...?

Guess in your world "some" means maybe for yourself only.

Not only is it not a slick deal...but the things to make it "slicker" involve a specific credit card which you're not even giving the whole picture on.

The "extended warranty" is only an extension of the factory warranty. Good....but most issues nowadays are user caused accidents: (i.e. cracked screen, lost, dropped in water, etc).

Those are not covered by the extended Discover warranty so you'll still need to purchase some type of additional coverage to cover the (most common) above problems.

OP, paying retail for a phone cannot be a slick deal.
not paying overpriced prices to a traditional carrier is good, but that's a separate story
