Aren't the physical dimensions identical? The SD'er in me says just get the 7 Plus case. You'll just have extra space in the camera cutout and lose access to the 3.5mm port. But the latter becomes irrelevant when you jump on another SD for BT earphones Big Grin

I thought taking out the jack would make it thinner which would make 7 different dimension than 6/6S.

I use Square Reader so I have to have the jack. It was really dumb that Apple removed the jack. 6S had disappointing sale last time. This isn't going to make people flock to 7. But some people might pick up 6S cheap. I got friends on 5S and 6 who will choose 6S after 7 is released (so it's cheaper).

I saw a 'joke' that the real reason Apple removed the 3.5 mm jack was specifically to eliminate the use of readers like Square, PayPal, etc. and force people/businesses to adopt Apple Pay.
I say 'joke' because I think this is probably one of the most compelling arguments for Apple's choice to get rid of it.

I get it. I looked into iPhone 7's thickness and it's exactly the same as 6S. So they didn't even make the phone thinner.

Making it thinner would have been a bad move, IMO. Thinner = smaller battery = junk battery life.
I think keeping it the same dimensions was a move to capitalize on economies of scale/reuse manufacturing resources.
I agree with the move not to make the phone thinner because that would have meant junk battery life and would have resulted in a ridiculously (read: impractically) thin device. There really is no reason to make the phone thinner at this point, IMO.

I read something else that suggested that because this is a break from the normal "tick-tock" cycle (i.e. not the "S" model) where we might typically expect introduction of a new form-factor and/or more 'revolutionary' features, Apple is squeezing more profit out of each sale because they probably won't hit the sales numbers you would typically see in a non-S year.

I agree. Thinner iPhone will be more prone to bending/breaking without using a stronger material such as titanium, which would make it more costly. You could make up for the volume by making the screen bigger. But I don't think there is a market for something bigger than 6S+.

I use headphone jack a lot and I also use square card reader occasionally. I also use external HD to watch downloaded digital copy of movies. With 7 I won't be able to use headphones and watch movies via external HD at the same time. I don't want to deal with dongle or some kind of splitter. I got enough things to carry as is.

S was usually meant to fix the flaws on non-S or introducing something big, for example 4S with Siri over non-Siri 4, 5S to fix the antennae issue with 5, and 6S fixing the problem with 6 bending. This 7 looks like slightly improved 6S. But I can't see them introducing some game changer for 7S if it exists.

They missed the sales target for 6S because people are waiting longer and longer to upgrade. Their market share has been steady because the market is very saturated right now. Prior to 6S I had 4S but I know I'm the extreme case. Other people typically wait 2 years until the payment obligation is fulfilled. I know lots of people are going to hold on to their 6S for a lot longer. Dumping the headphone jack isn't going to help.

I guess the proof will be in the sales figures and stock performance/quarterly earning report.

I don't know that I would consider the "S" models 'fixes', but they were more incremental upgrades.

Rumors about next year seem to indicate that it won't be an "S" year either because it will be the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. I'm actually expecting a major redesign and feature addition/insertion. As you say, people are waiting longer and longer to upgrade so this year seems like Apple may have acknowledged that and released a 'bridge' upgrade with the intention of capturing a larger population of upgraders with their anniversary release next year.

This is all speculation, of course.

With this one I will just make an educated guess, that it will miss the sales figures again. Dropping the headphone jack isn't going to magically get people to buy the new phone, IMO.

Usually with the non-S, it's a drastic redesign and they tend to have new issues. Earlier I said 5 had antennae problem, I think it was 4. But 6S uses aircraft grade aluminum to fix the issues with people bending the phone putting it behind their back pocket. But you're right S always had incremental upgrade. This 7 feels like upgrade of 6S. Depending on where you get your rumors, they could be right. Usually it's someone leaking the picture of hardware. That was how people were expecting the removal of the jack. It's too early to speculate the next iPhone because they haven't made anything yet.

In for 1. Now that I'm getting a black phone, it feels OK to have a pink case. Kinda clashed with my gold 6 & 6s. Thanks OP Smilie
