Am I missing something here? $80 for a thermometer? Not sure why this is a good deal. Sincere question.

This is what the pro's use. Watch any of the Bar-b-q competition TV shows, and they will all be using this.

Thanks for the info. So we are paying for the band name, correct? The reason I asked was I bought similar products for I think around $10 or so. Chinese made, of course. Probably won't last as long and not as accurate but it does the job for me.

I have one and it's well made and gets up to the right temp fast. I had a cheap one and it took 10 seconds to get a good reading. In the meantime you are letting the heat out and your hand it getting toasted. The way they are made, no matter how you hold it the read out rotates so you can read it.

These read the temperature in about two seconds, NIST certified accurate to within 0.1 degrees. It has a very thin probe and is ideal for checking internal temperature of meats. You are buying quality, not just brand name. A must have for serious pitmasters and grill aficionados.

Correct I have a $10 POS from amazon. I have to move the food off to the side as I probe because the numbers keep climbing as the coals get hotter from the lid being off so long (open draft). I love my Maverick ET-733 but I only use it for long smokes.
