The processor is nearly two generations old with Kaby Lake coming this fall. Also, the QHD+ screen hurts battery life and requires the operating system (Windows 10) to scale the resolution so that text is readable without a microscope.

Then why the $920 Dell XPS 13 2016 model with Core i5-6200U is a FrontPage deal. And Dell knows what they ahve done with this XPS series. With its QHD+ display, it can go well over 11 hours. Windows 10 Does not have issues with QHD or 4K screen, the issue you were talking about was in Windows 8.1.
I have Asus Zenbook UX301 13.3" with same resolution display and Vaio Z canvus with even smaller 12" screen, and none has any scaling issue.

The newest XPS 13 model has been on sale for the same or less price than this deal, except with a 1080p FHD (non-touch) screen and 128GB SSD.

This is still a good deal, but for anyone who doesn't need the QHD+ touchscreen and 256GB SSD it's merely okay at best.

I have a touchscreen on my laptop and I find it "nice to have but not required" especially since it usually adds about half a lb to the total weight, reduces battery, and forces a glossy screen. Personally I'd prefer a fully decked out laptop (RAM and SSD) with just a FHD screen and non-touch so I can maximize the battery life. I leave all the heavy duty work for my desktop, but not everybody has the same needs.

Hmmmm.... Need a laptop for a college freshman who will bike to class. Which should I get? This older version of the XPS 13 or:
  • Asus VivoBook Flip here
  • Dell 13" 7000 series here

If I had to make a purchase immediately, I would get the $800 Dell XPS 13, despite the disadvantages I've previously mentioned (outdated processor, slightly less battery life with QHD+ screen). The only other major con of the XPS 13 is the lack of ports (like HDMI and USB-C).

The other two laptops you mentioned have flaws in their screen, keyboard, battery life that the XPS 13 doesn't have. Also, the build quality and form factor (it's small) of the XPS 13 is way above the VivoBook and Inspiron 7000 you have linked, which makes the price premium you pay worth it. Unless you really need the 2-in-1 tablet mode, the XPS 13 definitely wins in my book. The other option is to wait until October-November for better deals if your child can get by without a laptop for the fall semester.

Review for XPS 13: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell...817.0.html

Review for VivoBook Flip: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus...787.0.html

Review for Inspiron 13 7000: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell...209.0.html

Good luck.

Get something cheaper...somewhere in the range of $400 - $600...college freshman needs to proves himself or herself before getting something overkill for school work
