I thought the same thing, but it appears it comes with two covers, one that looks a bit less ridiculous. Still, I liked the little square NUC design more, but the power in this is actually quite impressiv

Don't understand why it costs so much. Saw Rocket League running on it and it couldn't even give smooth framerates at 1280x800 resolution.

Because it's the first NUC that has Thunderbolt 3, which has enough bandwidth to enable external PCIe graphics card enclosures so you can have a tiny, super quiet nuc and external high end graphics card for high end gaming. It also has dual m.2 NVMe slots so you can have 2 of the super high speed SSDs. That may or may not be of use to you, but there it is; that's why its so expensive.

based on reviews it is loud, runs hot and has mediocre performance. I would wait for more to come to market to find one with better cooling.

Tax kind of kills it for a lot of people. It's still a good price post-tax, but not enough for me to pull the trigger.

Newegg has the better deal if Amazon taxes you.

How is Newegg better? 20% off $649 compared to $519?

This + enclosure + gpu is both pricier and bulkier then a dedicate itx rig.

I do like it for the small footprint though, but would rather get a similar priced mini pc from Dell/HP/Lenovo that has maybe a bit less oomph, but better specs (once you add ram, disk and os) and better warranty too.

Damn... the no power cord option is $80 more. I hate when they rake you over the coals with the options. I'd be in otherwise.
