Southwest are offering 2 credit cards (personal as well as 2 Business if you really want to double up) Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier and Plus cards with 50k bonus points each after spending $2000 each in first 3 months. Annual fees are $99 and $69 respectively (billed immediately in your first billing cycle)

Sign up for 2 cards, spend $4000 will give you 104,000 points. a little more spending or secondary users and such... to get you another 6000 points to reach 110,000 for companion pass. If you reach 110k after the turn of new year into 2017. you will be able to take advantage of it for both years 2017 and 2018 which will let you and your "companion" fly together for the price of 1.

The math:
Many "wanna get a way" fares come at $150 or 8531 points.
110,000 / 8531 = 12.89 (one-way flights for 2 people)
each flight is worth $150/person -> $300 for 2.
12.9 * $300 = $3868.xx

Not to mention Southwest have free bags ($25 per bag/per person/per flight - potentially another $650) and with the cards priority boarding and other perks from VISA

HAPPY FLYING

post #9: useful experience from user johannbiermann

Tip on Chases 5/24 rule which will deny applicants that have opened 5 or more credit cards in the 24 months prior to current application. Looks like it applies to these cards LINK [thepointsguy.com].

Tip for applying for business credit card...
Be prepared to discuss this with a Chase Agent prior to getting approved! LINK [extrapackofpeanuts.com]

Tip on when to apply...
Suggest applying in October and earning the points in the beginning of 2017 to maximize the amount of time you have the pass. Spend just shy of $2,000 in 2016 and get the remaining spend in January.

Tip for using hotel points to transfer to SWRR...
Since the business card may be hard to get, consider transferring hotel points (if you have a bunch) to try and get 57,000 or so of the 110,000 points (the other 53,000 come from the card - 50,000 bonus + 3,000 from the spending to get the bonus). There are many threads out there with people doing this successfully, although SWA terms make this sound like transfer points will not work - see SWA terms about 3/4 down the page LINK [southwest.com].

Tip for using Marriott points to buy hotel + SWRR points packages to transfer to SWRR...
Another option to get extra SWRR points is to buy hotel + SWRR points from Marriott. Packages start at 200,000 Marriott points. See copy of packages HERE [thepointsguy.com]. Also note that Marriott allows free transfers of points between spouses and some other programs do too - see tips HERE [thepointsguy.com].

automatically assigned group when you check-in for flights. always group 1 or 2 when booked with card. Southwest also don't assign seats so if you get on early you can pick whichever seat you want.

none of the "first class upgrades", "extra leg room upgrades"....

Would love the perspective of anyone who is familiar with obtaining the companion pass for the full two years

I signed up for the personal card in March, the business card in June,, I have obtained my bonuses and am at about 107,000 points. Is there a trick to obtaining the 2 year companion pass, does it depend on which day my billing cycle ends?

My guess is id wait until the day after the billing cycle ends in december to spend the last bit needed to reach 110,000. And as long as i get past that mark between the last day of the cycle and December 31, I should be good? Should i wait until after my billing cycle in January?

Any specifics examples of what to do or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thx SDers!

I'm guessing most people that are doing this are already aware, but I'm just going to put it out there for anyone that is new to this. When you get the companion pass, it is good for the current year and the next year. However, you must get all 110k points in the same calendar year. So if you get the cards right now, and get your 110k all this year, your companion pass will be good for a total of about 13 or 14 months. However, If you were to apply for the cards in October or November or December, wait until January to get your points, then the companion pass will be good for 22-24 months. Keep in mind that you only have 3 months to spend the $2,000. So if you can do the charges in a short amount of time, you can apply for the cards sooner, and wait until January to make the charges. If you need more time to spend the $2,000, you may want to take the risk and wait longer, in the hopes that this promo doesn't end before you can apply for the cards. My personal recommendation, I would apply for the cards in about mid-October, cards arrive end of October, and as soon as you get your statement in December (so your November statement), You then have about 6 weeks to spend the $4,000 ($2,000 for each card). Once the November statement posts in December, you should have the rest of the month of December that you can start spending the money, because that will all go on your December statement in January, which counts towards the next year (if anyone has experienced differently than this, please let me know so that I can change this info!). The easiest (i.e.most expensive) way to hit $4,000 is send yourself the money via paypal. This will cost you 2.9%, or $116.60. $285 for the companion pass and all those points really isn't bad, but it isn't the cheapest thing ever, either. Other than paypal, other main options are putting all bills and expenses possible on the card (utilities, groceries, rent/mortgage where possible, pay for family/friend's bills and they pay you cash, etc.), manufactured spending (google it if you don't know what it is, probably not the best way to get into MS, if you haven't done it before, as it is an added stress, but could be a possibility), or purchasing gift cards that you then use as cash for future spending. I have had a companion pass for the last 4 years due to these cards, and it is fantastic. Southwest is definitely not the most comfortable airline, nor does it fly to the most places, but it is one of the slickest deals out there for many flights once you have these points and companion pass!

TL;DR. You may want to want until closer to the end of the year to get these cards and then spend the money next year so the companion pass is good for 2017 and 2018.

While you may not be in an ideal situation, you are not in a bad situation. If you are at 107k right now, I would recommend getting the final 3k as quickly as possible. This way you can get the companion pass as quickly as possible, so that you can have the most use of it (especially if you are wanting to use it within the next little bit). The one thing, however, that I cannot over-emphasize is, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR TO COMPLETE THE 110K!!! If you do, you will not get a companion pass. You MUST get to 110k this year, and you will then have it for the rest of this year, and all of 2018. True, it would have been better if you had gotten earlier this year, but you still have it for 1 year, and you still have 110k points to use for your flights. I'd still call that a slick deal.

Highly recommend you research this on flyertalk and look through guides at any number of points sites.

My understanding - and you need to confirm - is that the 110000 points need to be earned in one calendar year, and the 1st year starts in the calendar year you earn the points in. If you hit 110000 before the end of 2016, the companion pass will last through the end of 2017. The general guidance is to earn all of the 110000 points early in the year.

you meant for his situation specifically, he'll only be able to take advantage of the pass for the rest of 2016 and all of 2017, right?
And he should complete the 110k immediately.

I got the SW plus a few months ago and have ~52K . If I understand correctly I could transfer points from the 100K ultimate rewards to accommodate the 110K on the SW.

I should be able to get the companion pass right??
