lost drive letter

why am I losing a hd letter (ex. H: for 2tb internal drive) when I plug in an external 3.0 usb hard drive?

I'm using Windows 7

chances are windows is assigning the letter to 2 devices. go into computer management, drive management, and see what the drive letter assignments are.

open admin command prompt
type in: diskpart
type: automount enable
exit

Might be limited letter drives. Would go would bobolis advice.

thanks for the advice. I went to the computer management/disk management screen to assign drive letters to the portable hd. Everything seems to be working fine. I've rebooted several times and the portables keep their assigned letter (ex S: and TSmilie.

Will this letter assigned to the drives themselves stay the same if I move it to another computer? or after that when I plug back into my desktop?
