how big is this thing? looks like it would be a while backpack... Doesn't seem very portable 😄.

why not use the record function on my phone?

Little bit bigger than standard DSLRs. You're never going to get high quality audio from your phone.

If you shoot video with a dslr this is a must. I own the dr70d I shoot weddings, I use two inputs for wireless mic, another two for a shotgun mic or xlr inputs for a second wireless, all independent record knobs manually. I put it between my camera and tripod plate
Runs on 4 aa batteries for about 90 minutes
Able to plug directly interested camera and I can also record audio with an sd card. Records each separate channel a plus
