I have the Z97 board for over a year now, it's been great, overclocking pre-set for an easier overclock got the i7 4790K to 4.7GHz in a click, it also has a HDD saver mode where the HDD can be turend off untel you want to turn it on through software, it lasts longer, saves energy and noise, and it would be hidden! so that's a plus.

A solid motherboard all around.

Any issues with the Z170 board? How would it compare to a similarly priced Gigabyte board? I've read that the Killer ethernet isn't as good as the Intel ethernet, would that be a problem?

it saves power and noise, it wont make the hard drive last longer. It's been proven a few time that a hard drives that continues to run will run longer than one that stops and starts back up. Just like your car, the most wear you get from your car is starting it and stopping it, because the oil stops flowing or is already settled and has to get places.

Generation old and still stuck with a big rebate. Meh. If you're spending this much on old generation boards, you may as well upgrade to Skylake and ddr4.

then why be on $D looking for deals-- why don't you just go buy the new stuff and post in those threads, right?

For $75 this is a solid deal for those starting to build or moving parts from one rig to another.

I don't know what the difference is between this and the z97x version that I have, but it's been a great motherboard to work with, running strong for almost a year.

Sd4shane is correct, and his/her advice is helpful to people who haven't been researching this stuff.

This is not a great deal for old tech. Asrock z170 deals have been in this range, and 4690k/4690k aren't really discounted anywhere. The only plus this would have is if you had some extra ddr3 laying around to use.
