Is 16X really worth the extra $10? I thought most Blu-ray discs are only certified for 4X or 6X burns, right? I've heard goods thing about LG though.

I would imagine that the 16x would be more for the read speed. If your ripping a bunch of blurays, It would certainly be worth the extra $10...

For the last 2 years, this Asus model [newegg.com] was $29.99 AR around the holidays. However, it is only 12X, and it doesn't appear that Newegg is stocking it any more. Asus does have a 16X model [newegg.com] which has been as low as $38.99 AR. It's always possible that they will dip $5 to $10 around the holidays again... but most likely with a rebate involved.

Edit: a couple of reviews mentioned this has a blue LED.

Any idea the color of the activity LED on these? Seems like the green LED is still common on these while blue LEDs have taken over as power and HDD indicators on PC cases.

the blue ray consortium gets a minimum fee on every device and media purchase AND some of this as you can imagine is funneled to the content industry too almost like what's done in Canada, and this is slowly killing off PC demand for Blu ray.. most exp. drives probably cost about $8 to make by now

I currently own exactly one BR title (SW TFA) and don't plan on buying many more what with streaming (although the local library system has a decent selection of titles), so this would mostly be for data archival and backup. How expensive are BR blanks that have more capacity than 25GB and what are the most commonly used sizes and typical costs these days? I think I saw some decent deals at the local MC but can't recall the specifics.

Also, is there any difference in writing speeds between these 2 drives?

Nope. As long as u want full bitrate rips. Ppl use handbrake to compress further. And vlc to play them.

I use Handbrake to get the video down to about 5gb. I leave the audio untouched, but that takes up more space.
