I hope this is not an indication as to where Marriot/SPG are going....If so, they are looking to screw us the same seek they got merger approval.

They have progressively upped point redemption cost and now this....

Just fyi to all thinking about this. 2 nights in a cat 5 is at most worth 32k points. Previous high on this card was 35k points

Which is not bad IF you plan to use the points for hotel booking anyways. But yeah, I think 2 nights is steep for $3k spend compared to Hyatt or IHG card. Both can get you 2 nights in a relatively nice hotel for less spend.

Getting 2 free nights reduces the flexibility of having the transferrable Starpoints. Was hoping for a 35K offer.

If you use it at a cat 5, otherwise its worthless to do this offer. Current points offer is 25k for personal and business which give your the option to transfer to airlines with the 5k bonus on 20k transfer, which i think is a better deal.

Still id wait closer to the merger, they might offer a good signup bonus again.

I think neither the 25k nor this sign-up bonus is any good. The 25k offer puts you in a weird spot to transfer because you get 5k bonus for transferring in increments of 20k. So 25k is essentially 33k (including $3k spend) towards any major rewards program. Most of us wouldn't prioritize this over a card that offers 50-60k to a specific program.

I know the consensus is SPG points are great because they're flexible but the flexibility is only good if you aren't sure what you want. I got both SPG cards when it was 35k and I'm still sitting on the points. Most of my needs have been met with Chase UR or AMEX MR.

That's why the 35k deal was so good if you got both cards.

by the time you did the spend you were pretty close to 80k SPG, which becomes 100k miles on a wide array of airlines.

And you could use that to fill in any gaps you had on obtaining rewards from Chase OR Amex (since most airlines aren't available on both systems but ARE available on SPG)
