Home Backup/NAS/Media sever
I have been doing a lot of research and reading on this topic and want to try to get a consensus. Here are the capabilities I want to create.
- cheap cost (no monthly plans)
- Stream my music and movies from any system in my house, as well as remotely
- have a backup of all my files (documents, music, movies, etc.)
- capability of taking a drive with me for use while traveling.
I think this is very capable, but I want to make sure I am doing this right the first time.
Here is what I was planning and the reasoning:
|Raspberry Pi v3||Very cheap system, lots of configurability, and small in size|
|2 5TB external drives||RAID backup one with the other - turn off setup and remove one drive to travel with in order to access files if going out of country or to a bad internet location. As long as I don't add new files to the drive and hook it back up before starting the system again, it shouldn't cause any problems with the RAID software as it will be on the Rpi.|
|FreeNAS OS||No real preference, just seems to be the best to use.|
|Plex Media server||Free media streaming...just point it to the folders you want to share|
What do you guys think? Overkill? Changes? Warnings? Suggestions? Be prepared for...?
I also want to make sure that in the future when I need to increase space, I can swap out drives without destroying the setup and having to start over. For example, as if one drive went bad in a RAID, I can remove a 5TB for a 10TB and the original one will just recreate the files on the new drive.
