Looking for thoughts on the Synology DS2415+

Hey all, I'm looking for some insights from people who have first hand experience with the Synology DS2415+.

I'm looking at investing in the unit plus the expansion to consolidate and simplify my local backup structure. So, my use case is:

Backup all data to the synology device, using versioning, through Acronis backup.
I may run some test VM's off the box(front ended by an old desktop)

I've run some 1815's for some small businesses I know for extra storage, but not gotten to deep into the system as it stands. Anyone have performance thoughts or concerns?

Will this system get the new btrfs update?

And before it starts, blah, blah, custom build. I've not got the time nor the patience to do it, so it's off the table.

You're going to get a 12 drive NAS just for local backups? I hope we are talking about a dozen or more computers. Also has it been discussed for users to store critical files on a central server and not locally?

Btrfs is listed as a feature on that drive, but I don't believe it is "stable" for RAID 5 and 6 type configurations, only mirroring. See Also no LZ4 support.

Although Synology doesn't support it, ZFS would be a much much better alternative to Btrfs. Not familiar with Acronis versioning and how much of a space hog it is/isn't, but ZFS has snapshots that could solve that as well. FreeNAS has the Mini XL in the same price range, but it only has 8 drive bays and familiarity is definitely a selling point.

Good luck!
