About Slickdeals.net
Founded in 1999, Slickdeals.net is a free, user-driven deal sharing site with a mission to provide consumers an avenue to collaborate and share information in order to make the best shopping decisions. Slickdeals achieves this by providing its users a forum for communication and various shopping tools. Slickdeals.net prides itself on being user and community focused, never allowing paid placement for frontpage deal listings.

Tips on searching & preventing reposts
The best way to search whether an identical item has been posted, is by using an item SKU. For example, for amazon, that would be the ASIN number (such as B000NJO3TC for example. For newegg it would be the NE number, (such as N82E16814130086) and for Dell it would be the A-number for electronics and accessories (such as a0973889) or configuration id for systems (such as brpc2fe for example). Those are all real items recently posted, search for them, and see what I mean. The coolest thing is that search picks it all up from links, so even if a previous poster was challenged with making up a good title, or adding any additional information, but included the link, it will still be picked up. Do NOT use "-" in your searches. Same goes for keyword such as "NOT" or "not". They are understood as negation modifiers, and will exclude the items. So if you are searching for say "Toshiba HD-A2", you should search for "toshiba hd a2" and not "toshiba hd-a2", because if you do - you will get results only for threads which contain "toshiba hd" and at the same time NOT contain "a2" in them (which kind of defeats the purpose of the search).

Guide to Front Page Features

What's new with SlickDeals.net

Here is a brief overview of the new features, and if you would like to learn about them in more detail, and how to use them, click on the pointers.

Front page

The front page has received a lot of new features. Most of the elements of the image below are linked to the detailed explanation of each section and all its features. So be sure to click around.

New Front Page Look

New way to look at deals

As you might have already noticed, the default front page has become considerably shorter, and with it came a new way to look at deals. By default when the front page is loaded, you will see only deal titles. Ongoing deals are shown in bold, blue color (1) , and expired deals are shown in grey (2). Active And Expired Deals

If you are interested in a deal, you can see details on how to get it by simply clicking on its title. The deal will then expand (4), showing all the information you need to get it. To close the deal details, click on the individual title one more time Expanded Deal

If you would like to see the deals for the whole day, simply click on the day bar (3), and all the deals for that day will expand revealing the details. To close the deals for that day, click the day bar one more time. Day Title Bar

If you would like to see details for all the deals listed on the page, click the “Expand All” button on top of the deals, and they will all show up. To close all deal details, click the “Collapse All” button Expand All

Sharing the deals with others and deal discussion(5)

Just as before, you can quickly share a deal with your friend(s) by using one of the 3 methods:

  • Sending them an e-mail using “Tell A Friend” button available for each deal
  • Sending it to their AOL Instant Messenger account, using the “AIM” button
  • Or sending them a Permalink via other means of communication

To go to the forum discussion thread for this deal, click on "Comments" button

Share Deals With Friends

Front page tags(6)

Tags have become a popular feature for many sites around the internet. A tag is a short one-two word phrase, which assigns a deal into a specific category, based on the user preferences. After a deal is assigned a tag, it can be either searched for, or filtered by using that tag. For example, if a deal is tagged “media”, clicking on that tag will show all other deals tagged “media”. Also, searching for a “media” tag will provide the same results. A deal can have more than one tag.

To add a tag to a deal, click Add Tags button, and to remove it, click the Remove Tag button next to the tag name. If you do not see the Remove Tag button next to a tag, it means that you can not remove it based on your privileges.

Some of the tags are automatically assigned when the deal is posted and can not be edited. New tags can be added and removed by any registered user according to the following hierarchy:

  1. Moderators can edit tags for all users
  2. Distinguished users can edit their own tags, tags assigned by other distinguished users, and tags assigned by regular users
  3. Regular users can edit their own tags and tags of other regular users only.
  4. Anonymous users (those without a user account in the forums) cannot edit tags, but can view and search for them

The most popular tags for the front page are shown in the “Popular tags” box at the bottom of the front page, where you can click on them and search for tags not listed there. Clicking an individual tag will only display deals tagged with it, and nothing else. Searching for a specific tag will result in the same behavior as clicking one.

User Central(9)

The User Central is basically a reproduction of the forum user control panel. Here you can log into the site, and enable all the features based on your user level (including tagging ability), without having to enter the forums. After you log in, you will see the basic information, including the number of new messages you received from other users and the last time you visited the forum. User Central

User interface control (10)

You now have some control over how the front page and forums are displayed. Depending on your preferences, you may choose to stretch the page to fit the whole browser window, or use a classic centered layout for the deal page. You can also control the size of the screen fonts from the same location for better readability, without having to use your browser zoom function.

All the changes are done using “UI Control” box(10). To Increase the font size, click Increase Font Size button, to decrease it, click Decrease Font Size button, and to stretch/center page, use the Toggle Page Width toggle button. If you would like to return to the default page layout (Normal size font, centered layout), use the Reset UI button. You can also contol the appearance of the page by selecting themes available to you. To change the theme, click a drop-down menu UI Themesand select a different theme from currently active.

New search capabilities from the front page(8)

You can now conduct 4 different types of searches without leaving the front page.

We have already discussed the tag search above when we talked about the tag section, which can be done by either clicking the popular tag or searching for a different tag name in the Popular Tags Search box.

The other 3 kinds of searches are available in the Search box in the upper right corner. There you can

  1. Search the front page
  2. Search the forums
  3. Search for prices on various products using PriceGrabber™ price comparison engine

By default, the search is set to front page, and you can change your selection using radio buttons.

Search Box

Hot Topics(11)

The hot topics section shows you the most active discussion topics from our Hot Deals forum. Go ahead, join the discussion :). Clicking on the "Hot Topics" title will take you straight into the "Hot Deals" forum Hot Topics

Hot offers(13)

This section gives you the information about the most popular coupons from various merchants. They are not all we got, there is much more of them in the Coupons section as discussed below. You can view the Coupons section by clicking View More Offers link or using the page navigation menus on top and bottom of the page. Hot Offers

Collapsing right-hand side elements (12)

After the original beta released to the public, many mentioned that right had side of the page was too busy for their liking. To help remedy this, we have changed the layout and made all of the right-hand side elements of the page collapsible. If you do not regularly use features such as Search or User Central, you can "minimize" them by clicking the Box Collapse button, leaving more space for the Hot Topics and Hot Offers boxes. The box will then collapse, leaving only the header visible. Click the same button one more time to expand the collapsed section. You can collapse any section which contains the Box Collapse button.

Coupons

Here you can find the latest coupons from all merchants that send them to us. Look around, and you will definitely save some money while shopping for things you need.

Coupons

You can look through coupons by categories Coupons by category, as well as list them in alphabetical sections Coupons by alphabetical sections.

Forums

Our forums have received a facelift as well – we have changed the main theme and added a few new features. Just like the front page, the forums now have matching themes and a user interface control on the botom of each page

Forums UI Control

Forum tags

After the original beta went public, one of the main forum suggestions was the positioning of tags and categories sections. We have moved them to the bottom of each forum page, instead of on the top as in the original public preview.

Just like the front page, forums have also received the tagging capability. They work according to the same principles as front page tags.

Some of the tags are automatically assigned when the deal is posted, but can be added by any registered user, with the following hierarchy:

  • Moderators can edit tags for all users
  • Distinguished users can edit their own tags, tags assigned by other distinguished users, and tags assigned by regular users
  • Regular users can edit their own tags and tags of other regular users only.
  • Anonymous users (those without a user account in the forums) cannot edit tags, but can view and search for them

Forums Most Popular Tags

To add a tag to a forum thread, click Add Tags button, and to remove it, click the Remove Tag button next to the tag name. If you do not see the Remove Tag button next to a tag, it means that you can not remove it based on your privileges.

Clicking on a tag name will filter the forum only showing the threads which have been tagged with it. To remove the filtering, click Unfilter All button

Forum categories

The category feature is not new, and it will remain, complementing the newly added tagging capabilities.

We have, however, added a section in the forum header where you can see all the categories and filter the threads based on the category which is assigned to each thread.

While categories remain useful, we encourage you to also use tags, since they are significantly more versatile, and not limited to a pre-defined category set.

Forum Categories

Thread preview feature

While browing the forums, you no longer have to open the whole thread to look at the details, you can use the new thread preview capability. It allows you to see the first post within the thread without entering the actual thread, saving you time. You have all the capabilities you would usually have for that thread, such as voting thumbs up or thumbs down, replying, and of course, reading the contents of the post. If the information in the first post does not satisfy your curiosity, you can still view the complete thread by clicking on its title, just as before.

Thread Preview Before

To use the quick preview feature, click the Quick preview button button next to the thread title

Thread Preview After

Clicking the Quick preview button button one more time will collapse the thread preview back and return the forum to normal view

Voting system update

Voting system (thumbs up and thumbs down) now uses AJAX to count votes. What this means to you is that once you cast your vote, it's recorded without the need to refresh the thread page, saving you time, especially for users on slower connections.

In addition to that, we have added "partial thumbs". Now, when a thread is about half way to getting a new thumb (up or down), the partial thumb will appear slightly discolored (Thumb up partial and Thumb down partial) as opposed to full thumbs (Thumb up full and THumb down full). Once the vote count has reached the required limit for the full thumb, the previously partial thumb will be replaced by it.

Personal Stickies

Sometimes you just want to know what's going on with a particular forum thread, don't you? And you want to make sure you don't forget about it on accident. Personal stickies are here just for that.

By now you are probably familiar with a Sticky designation, which means that the thread is always on top of the forum, no matter how old it is, how many posts it has, etc. But until now the feature has only been accessible to moderators of the forum

Personal stickies allow you to "stick" a thread on top just for yourself. You will be the only one seeing it once you stick it.

To stick a thread, enter the thread you wish to work with, in the right hand upper corner click on "Thread Tools" and select "Stick the thread to the top"

Stick thread to the top

After you do this, the thread will always show on top in the forum it's presently in. To help you identify it, the thread has "My Sticky" designation in front of its title, and also uses a red pin My sticky pin instead of a blue pin Sticky pin which is used by moderators to designate a sticky thread

My sticky

To unstick the thread, enter it one more time, click "Thread Tools" and select "Unstick thread" from the drop-down menu

Unstick Thread

Each user is limited to 25 personal stickies total. Once the sticky #26 is added, sticky #1 will be automatically removed by the forum software

Price Search

Price search allows you to directly go to PriceGrabber price comparison site to search for the best prices on various items at numerous internet merchants.

Amazon Filler items

Many of you have already seen the new site we have added a few months ago – SlickFillers.net. It will become an integral part of SlickDeals.net. It provides you with information about the inexpensive items on Amazon.com which you can add to your cart to reach over $25, and receive free shipping, rather than having to pay $5 or so for shipping.

Many of you have probably also noticed 2 new sections of SlickFillers, namely most discounted items and best sellers – they provide you with the items with largest discounts from their list price, and items which sell the most according to Amazon rank system respectively.

We have significantly expanded the number of items SlickFillers indexes, which is over 180,000 unique items sold by Amazon.com which qualify for free SuperSaver shipping in various categories and price ranges. We have also added keyword search, so people looking for a specific item actually can get it, rather than buying something they would have no use for.

Fillers are now integrated into the main site, and support the same user interface controls as front page and forums do, including themes and text size.

Store Ratings

A lot people have suggested a section for store ratings. Instead of creating one from scratch, we teamed up with the industry leader Resellerratings to provide you with merchant reviews.

The Store Ratings section can be accessed at the top on the menu bar.

Deal Alerts FAQ

Q: I just set up an alert, and got an e-mail with more than one thread in it within 5 minutes.
A: If you are the first person to create an alert for a certain keyword, in a certain forum, with a certain rating, your first email may contain all threads matching this alert within 24 hours. People who add an identical alert after you, will not receive the same email, and will only be notified about future threads. This will become increasingly rare as more alerts are added.

Q: Are Deal Alerts CaSe SenSITive?
A: No. "LapToP" is the same as "laptop"

Q: I want to be notified via PM. Can I do it now?
A: Yes, you may choose Email, Private Message or Both as notification types. In case of PM, please remember, that you are responsible for cleaning up the Inbox, otherwise the alerts will be discarded.

Q: Can I choose any other type of notification rather than instant?
A: You can choose instant, daily or both type of notification. Instant alert is dispatched within minutes of thread posting. Daily aler is dispatched at midnight Pacific Time and contains a summary message for all threads that matched your alerts for the day.

Q: Do I have to maintain my PM Inbox if I want to get alerts as PMs?
A: Yes and no. Our system automatically cleans up PMs sent to you via Deal Alerts system when they reach 4 days of age. But if you fill your Inbox before the cleanup, you will not receive alerts.

Q: Can I edit an existing alert?
A: Yes, click the "edit" link to the left of the alert name in My Deal Alerts

Q: I added an alert, but didn't get any notifications yet... Why is that?
A: Check Forum Search for an identical search phrase in the same forum.

  • If you didn't get any results, then you won't get an alert, since there is nothing to alert you about.
  • If you did get results, check the following:
    • Thread start date (not last post date) must be within 24 hours from now
    • Thread original post or title must contain the exact keyword you are searching for. Subsequent posts by the same user and/or other users do not count

Remember, that if someone had an identical alert setup before you and thread has already been processed and alerts sent out, you will not get a notification about that thread for your alert. But you will for all threads in the future.

If you are absolutely certain you didn't get an alert about something you should have, let us know by posting a new thread here, stating your keyword, rating level and forum.

Q: Can I set an alert up for a "parent forum" such as "The Deals"?
A: At this time, only forums which may contain posts directly and to which you have access to can be used for deal alerts.

Q: I made a thread with a keyword matching a Deal Alert I have set up. I didn't get notified about it.... Why is that?
A: You will not get alerts about threads to which you are the author. Why would you?

Q: Can I set up alerts looking for keywords in title only?
A: Yes, you need to use a special title only indicator in your alert. For example, you are looking for digital camera only in titles, you would add this alert:
@title "digital camera"

Q: I am looking for "cup" or "cups" should I add one or both?
A: You may use | (vertical separator, also known as "pipe") to search for items like this. So you would add an alert "cup | cups" (without quotes). On most keyboards, the pipe character shares the key with "\" (backslash)

Q: Can I use complex logical statements?
A: Sure. You have already seen the example with "cup | cups" above, let's try something else. For example, you are looking for threads with "laptop" which is not "dell". You would add an alert "laptop -dell"

N.B. A few important things to remember with complex logical alerts:
Double quotes " " effectively mean logical AND (search for this AND that). Take a look at the different results:
"notebook | laptop" will be looking for both notebook AND laptop
"notebook" | "laptop" however will be looking for either notebook OR laptop
It's recommended to enclose complex individual alerts which use pipe | with double quotes " ". It is required if individual alerts contain punctuation, such as space, comma, dot, dash, etc. For example:
flash drive | hard drive will fail and not send you any alerts
"flash drive" | "hard drive" on the other had will notify you about threads with flash drive OR hard drive in them
To combine title only search with multiple keywords, using the flash drive/hard drive example above, you would add the following alert:
@title "flash drive" | @title "hard drive"
If you are not sure you will be happy with the results of a complex logical alert, try it first with Forum Search. It will return all the threads which match your logical criteria. Also, remember, Forum Search does look through the whole thread rather than just first post + title which is what Deal Alerts does, so the actual alerts may be not identical to the Forum Search results.

Q: Can I get alerts via cell phone text message (SMS)?
A: Yes, but at this time you have to set your cell phone email (usually phonenumber@wirelesscarrier.website) as your main SlickDeals.net email address. Which means you will get any forum-related notices there as well. Also, most carriers limit SMS size to 160 characters, including subject, email address, etc... Which means you would barely be able to receive "Dear username" and nothing on the alert itself.

Q: How can I access it without using a direct link?
A: You can find it in User Control Panel (left hand side navigation block)

Q: If the thread author misspelled something, who should I blame for not getting an alert?
A: The thread author

Q: How does expiration work? Will my alerts just vanish after they expire?
A: Here is the breakdown on how it works:
Once your alert reaches an expiration date, it will go into grace period (7 days).
At that point, every PM or Email you get with an alert (not necessarily the one that's expiring) will contain a short line of text, notifying you about it,
You will also receive a daily warning about the expiration via both PM and Email.
If after grace period you still don't Renew the alert(s), it will be removed, and you will need to add it again.

Q: How can I renew an expiring alert?
A: There are 2 quick and simple ways to renew an alert:

  • By checking the checkbox in My Deal Alerts, selecting "Renew" (default option), and clicking "Go"
  • By editing a deal alert, and saving it.

Here are a few more additional details about Deal Alerts

Your Deal Alert is a combination of the following parameters:

  • Target forum (where to look)
  • Keyword phrase (what to look for)
  • Thread rating (minimum rating before alert is sent out)
  • Notification method for sending you an alert
    • Email (sent to address in your account)
    • Private Message
    • Email and Private Message
  • Notification frequency
    • Instant (within minutes of thread creation)
    • Daily (summary of your daily Deal Alerts for the day at midnight, PST)
    • Both Instant and Daily
  • Expiration. Alerts automatically expire after a certain number of days, and are deleted if not renewed within grace period (7 days)
    • To renew the alert, either edit and save it, or mark a checkbox next to it and use "Renew" option on the bottom right of your alerts list
    • When one or more of your alerts expire, you will receive a notification each day until it's renewed or removed by you or the system

Deal Alerts should conform to the following rules:

  • Your maximum number of alerts is listed in the upper right corner. When you reach your maximum, you will need to remove existing alerts to add a new one
  • A single alert can be in a single forum
  • Ratings and alerts are tracked within 24 hours from thread creation time
  • Keyword should be between 3 and 64 characters
  • Keywords are case insensitive (LaPtop is considered the same as laptop)
  • Keyword phrase may be left blank, if you also choose a Thread Rating not marked with an asterisk (*), effectily creating an alert which will notify you about any thread reaching your selected rating level within 24 hours.
  • "Ignore rating" will alert you about any threads matching your criteria, and "Front page" will notify you about threads matching your criteria reaching the Front Page, with everything else in between

You will only receive an alert if all of the following are true:

  • Your account is in good standing (not banned or otherwise restricted)
  • A new thread with a first post matching all of your Deal Alert parameters is created after you added a Deal Alert
    • A keyword phrase has to be an exact match. For example, measuring cup will match plastic measuring cup but will not match measuring cups or plastic cup (see advanced options for more)
    • Thread rating should be at least equal to your selected rating within 24 hours from thread creation
    • Rating "Ignore rating" will match threads with any rating
    • Rating "Front Page" is considered the highest rating, and will match any rating levels set up in your Deal Alerts
  • You can receive emails (for email notification)
  • You can receive Private Messages (for Private Message notifications)
  • Daily alerts are sent out at midnight, PST for the previous 24 hours, and are a summary for all alerts, for which you selected a Daily (or Both) notification frequency, sent to you in a single email and/or private message.
  • If you get more than one match for all of your alerts in a short period of time, you will receive a single email or private message with all of the alerts inside

Advanced Deal Alerts options

You may create advanced logical alers, using the following capabilities:

  • logical AND is achieved by using double quotes " "
    • Note, you must use double quotes for all advanced alerts which contain special characters, such as space, comma, hyphen, etc
  • logical OR is set up using | ("pipe") character. Usually located on the same keyboard key as \ ("backwards slash")
For example, if you are looking for measuring cup or measuring cups, set up your keyword as "measuring cup" | "measuring cups" (with quotes)
  • logical NOT is achieved using the minus " - " sign
For example, if you are looking for keyword free but not shipping, set up your alert as free -shipping
  • If you are interested in searching thread titles only, use a special parameter @title when setting up your alert keyword
For example, if you are looking for ddr memory in titles only, use @title ddr memory as your keyword
  • If you are not sure what kinds of results your advanced alert will return, use Forum Search before adding it, it will return the same results when used as a search request
  • You can also combine advanced logical options in your alerts setup, but make sure to test them using Forum Search to ensure that they will work

Why you may still not receive an alert

Certain things are beyond our control, and you may not receive an alert because of various reasons, including but not limited to:

  • System failure
  • Network connectivity issues
  • Internet Service Provider issues
  • Spam filters
  • Operator errors
  • Spelling errors

Even though we make every effort to achieve reliability, Deal Alert delivery is not guaranteed.

Why do certain links lead to a "Page not found" webpage?

If you installed an adblocker or Kazaa Lite, it will block certain links that this site uses. You can fix it by using the adblocker's settings to unblock the domains listed below.

bfast.com
linksynergy.com
qksrv.net
cc-dt.com
commission-junction.com

Almost all ad blockers use the hosts file so if your ad blocker doesn't have the option to unblock certain domains, you can fix it manually by editing the hosts file. Depending on your operating system the file will be located in different directories.

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Linux /etc/hosts

Once you locate the hosts file, open it up with your favorite text editor such as notepad and remove any lines with the following:

bfast.com
linksynergy.com
qksrv.net
cc-dt.com
commission-junction.com

After that, save and close your browsers. The links should work now. If the links still don't work, make sure you are editing the hosts file located in the specific directory mentioned above.

If that does not work, try disabling your software firewall and any ad blocking programs.

What are warning points?

Warning points are given to users when they break the rules. The amount of points will depend on the type of infraction and points will double if it is a repeated offense. If you reach the maximum of 10 points, you will be banned from the forums, for 7 days. Bans may be permanent if it is warranted.

Warning points are shown below your post count and can only be seen by moderators and yourself. To see details about all the warnings you have received, please click here.

What information should I include when I post a deal?

Try to include as much essential detail as possible in the title. Then expand on it in your post. General info to provide: expiration date of the coupon, minimum purchase requirements, site link, shipping and handling costs, and the coupon code. The more information you include, the better. Follow up if possible, so you can edit your post to include new developments.

Title Examples:

Bad
Seagate 160GB Hard Drive

Good
Seagate 160GB Hard Drive $50AR

Best
Seagate 160GB Hard Drive $50 after $40MIR

What should be done when a deal is reposted?

If you spot a repost, please click on the button and include the link to the repost. Please do not bump the thread by saying it is a repost.

What are reputation points and what are those green boxes under my username?

Accumulating reputation points

Every user starts with 10 reputation points. You can give other users rep points if you feel that the post has been helpful. Reputation points can only be given in the deal, freebie or help forums. The best way to accumulate rep points is by posting a good deal.

You can view the last 5 reputation points you have received in your usercp. The ones with green boxes count towards your score, while the gray ones are not. The points that count usually come from seasoned users.

If you have less then 50 posts you can rep others but it will not count towards their reputation points. Instead of showing up green under their user CP function, it will be grey.

Negative rep points are not allowed due to abuse but certain privileged users are able to give negative rep.

Regarding reputation abuse

Rep points are a way of saying thank you, gain a rank and maybe get recognition. There's no tangible value for reps and never will be. However, it is a metric that can be used to determine how helpful the user is to the community. Thusly, to keep the reputation points meaningful, we have general guidelines on how how reps should be handed out. The premise is, if it is used as a form of "thank you" for a user who did something helpful to the community, it's ok.

The following kinds of comments/usage are generally not allowed:

  • "Give me rep!"
  • "I'll rep you, you rep me"
  • "User XYZ is almost bold"
  • "Let's make User XYZ bold"
  • "Let's get User XYZ to X number of reps"

Threads/post where the user offers rep points for help or favors (not disguised as trading or trivial questions) are ok. However, rep points given for contests/games or trading for value items are not allowed since it doesn't follow the "thank you" premise. Examples:

  • "Answer 1+1 and get rep from me" not allowed
  • "Do something trivial and get rep" not allowed
  • "Beat me in game XYZ, get rep" not allowed
  • "Help me find a deal on X, get rep" ok
  • "Help me find a rebate form, will rep" ok

What are the thumbs up & thumbs down for?

It is a deal rating system. If you like the deal rate it , if not . If you want to retract your vote, click on .

Please use the rating system in a responsible manner since it helps identify the good deals from the bad ones.
