Do away with the word "REPOST"
It would be nice if someone would type the word "repost" ..it would come out as "have a nice day" (some games do this to combat bad language)
This way the repost police would actually be giving the OP a compliment!
I doubt if anyone wants to intentionally repost...

Example of peoples thoughts on this today:

i'm against people just saying repost since that really doesn't do anything. but its something that happens on message boards.

as to your quote, a LOT of people don't do anything to prevent reposts. there are cases when the same deal is still on the front page. if people searched many will be avoided.

Reposting dilutes the value of the website. It's BAD for visitors to Slickdeals! Some people mistakenly think reposting is OK, but the downside is much larger than the perceived benefit. Unrestrained reposting would pretty much destroy the forum.

When the first post is made, it receives the most feedback. Everyone who has an opinion will jump in at that time. The issues are discussed the best in the first post.

When the reposts come around, they contain only a fraction of the original amount of dialogue. People get tired of repeating themselves, so they just don't participate.

A simple "bump" would bring the original thread back to life.

The problem occurs when new visitors see just the repost. They think, "Yo, this forum is like lame, man," because there is so little discussion.

The search feature DOES work, if only the reposters would try to stretch their brainpower or try various combinations of terms. Often the reposter has never checked.

The more reposts there are, the more likely people are to see very short threads, and just not bother visiting Slickdeals anymore.

ok my thoughts on repost.

There are MODS in this forum, and part of their job is to merge reposts. There aren't 100 reposts of the same deal everyday, so chances are, they'll see it and merge the threads.

Now when someone accidently reposts, some foos come screaming reposts and even double reposts, like the OP stole their car or is on the most wated list or something, discouraging the OP from posting, and i believe this effect is very negative towards the forum's growth.

People don't repost intentionally, repost happens because the orignal post maybe didn't show up in their search. People reposts NOT because they want the 'fame' of posting a good deal, but to simply sharing a good deal so everyone can save some money.

And the first few replies they get are usually "REPOST!!!" What's the point of saying that? This is a deal discussion forum for God's sake, there is a button called modalert and repost policias should use that button to notify a MOD to merge the threads. When i'm in slickdeals, I want to find cheap deals to jump on, 90% of the viewer don't care if it is a repost. To me, replying "REPOST" is just threadcrapping.

bottom line: post REPOST does no good to the forum, and SD should emphasize on using MODalert button to report repost, maybe even offer a rep point for every repost reported just to get those point less "REPOSTS" off the forum. Anotherguest's suggestion is brilliant.

depends on how you define intentionally. if you mean their intent was to repost, i'd agree with you. but you expand it to include people who don't take simple measures to prevent it like SEARCHING, then i'd say most people intentionally repost. look at posters like jen_wv, she has a repost once in a while, but a majority are caught in a search. most reposts happen because people don't bother searching.

.

just saying repost is usually deleted, but we've trained most people to include a link. IMO its easier for me.

SD Needs to emphasise mod alerting to report reposts over "bashing" with repost- however with all the off topic, inconsiderate, innapropriate posting that gets into threads "repost" is the least thing to be worried about being posted.

The Mods here are some of the best I have ever encountered anywhere on the net, but even these "super Mods" have other things to do as well as having a LOT of threads to watch- expecting them to catch all (even most) of the reposts by themselves is plain silly.

Reposting the same deals drives other deals (original deals) further down the list, so while you may see a "hot" deal at the top- it being a repost is going to force another hot deal onto another page, or further down the listings to where many lazy people will not look. That will hurt everyone more than help the few lazy people looking for the first page only.

I suspect there are hundreds more people that simply do not know the forums exist than people complaining about having to actually read more than 1 page of hot deals. (I didn't know about them for over a month- the person who intro'd me to the site didn't know about them for several months!)

So here's the simple solution- take precautions to ensure you're not guilty of reposting (search- don't be lazy, ignorant, or inconsiderate to others) and mod alert reposts as you find them. Often I find them before others have had a chance to complain in the thread about it. Try to convert everyone to useing the mod alert for this and everything will work out.
