<p>You may have noticed that a bunch of frontpage deals have a <img src="http://static.slickdeals.net/images/slickdeals/pop_icon.gif" /> tag next to the headlines. The purpose of the tag is to highlight the deals that have a lot of user activity.</p>

<p>We have analyzed all the deals that have been posted throughout the year and found that deals with significant chatter tend to be hotter than normal. From the data mining, we came up with a "secret" formula to determine the popularity of a deal. Every action you take on the deal: thumbs up/down, comment, view, time since posting, etc will affect whether the deal is tagged as popular. We believe that these deals are the cream of the crop but we'll let you decide.</p>

Popular tagged deals are naturally among the hottest deals so it's not surprising. Recent deals have been very short-lived ... you have to jump on them quickly.

It does grab my attention, but I think I would like it better if it just had the star.

Was this idea created by the Department of Redundancy Department? I thought the point of a deal making the Front Page was because it was a hot deal? This seems akin to making a second Front Page for the "popular" Front Page deals. Seems ridiculous to me. Maybe too many deals are making the front page that shouldn't be.

I do give props to the SD mods/creators for continuing to try to improve the website though. :thumbsup: I am all for this, I just think this idea is luke warm at best.

Is this implemented in other themes? 'Cause I'm using Midnight and I don't see any difference.

I agree that it is redundant...but we already have the hot deals side bar and the up and coming sidebar...so apparently that's what people (or the web developers) want.

Other sites do this. I don't think it's necessary for the regulars, but maybe newbies?

I do like the idea, as sometimes I look for more information on a deal in the thread about it just to find there are a dozen comments and no real information, then I see a deal with 100+ comments and have plenty of additional information to find, as well as realize it is a popular deal.

But the the size of the popular tag and brightness make it distracting when looking through other deals, the bright red screams at my peripheral vision while I'm trying to read blue or gray text (yep, I look at expired deals all time). I think it would be much better if it were just the star.
