Incase you happen to go to a mall, there was a small aisle of samples in the beauty/fragrance area.

Beats having to wait 4-6 wks for a sample and you can grab as much, too bad the people at Clinique make-up made me feel awkward by staring at me the whole time, I would've grabbed handfuls.

Last time I saw something like this at Nordstrom, it was like if you spent $50 you'd get 1 sample, $75 you'd get 2... there was no sign. Do you think that was this, and why maybe the Clinique people were staring?

Nope no signs, it wasn't at any make-up booth just 12-15 clear bins full of samples in the middle aisle where people walk. All samples say "sample not for sale" on the back so I helped myself =]

Not sure if it's at all Nordstroms, I tried Bloomingdale's & Macy's after and they didn't have any.

last month @ nordstrom, if you purchased cosmetics from any cosmetics counter totaling up to $50, you could go to a table that had clear bins with samples and only choose TWO!
it was also located next to the middle aisle.
Had nearly exact same items and there was no sign.
the cosmetics rep told you about it when you were shopping at any counter.
not sure if this was meant to be totally free in your case, but you got freebies.

The post above is correct is a spend $25 get one, $50 = 2, $100 = 4. So what you are basically doing is taking samples without doing the qualifying purchases. That's why the clinique ppl are looking at you. If you grabbed by handfuls they probably would've stopped you. What you did is similar to grabbing handfuls of bags at a grocery store when you buy nothing.

yup you get samples after spending a certain amount maybe they allowed you to take them as they might have felt awkward confronting you about it.Some can be really cool about it too and allow you to take one or two samples with out a purchase depending on where you go but that could be the case at any store that offers samples.
