So, I'm curious if anybody has tried this.

I got the Special Halo 3 Edition 360, however Microsoft was retarded and put in just a 20gb, which just isnt enough in the NXE world. I was thinking about upgrading to either the 60gb, or probably the 120gb. Mostly because I think the kit with the 60gb doesn't come with a transfer kit, and I have a bunch of RB downloads.

So my question is, if I wanted to keep the same color scheme, would it be pretty simple to just use the transfer kit, then open both enclosures, move the new drive to the Halo 3 enclosure and just pop that back in? Should be simple and uses my current enclosure. I'd rather not buy a 3rd party drive and use the clone, gotta love Live.

Should be possible. The 120GB does come with a transfer cable. However, you should be aware that each (physical) hard drive has a unique BIN key. Obviously there isn't any way that MS could detect that you have a different enclosure server-side, you should be aware that re-using keys by formatting third-party drives and then putting them in a 360 enclosure could (in theory) lead to a Live ban.

I suppose what your proposing would work. I've never tried it as I've already bought the 120 GB HD earlier this year. If you have the technical ability, you could also try this:

Yeah those are pretty much what I wanted to do, except with proprietary drives so I won't have to worry about the bans when they come.

So the unique key is on the drive itself, not the enclosure... correct?

i have a little experience with this.. if your gonna do this just step up and buy the 120.. i dont think the transfer cable will work with the 60 gig unless they changed the software but you would be able to use the cable with the 3rd party software and move the files from the 20 gig HDD to the 60 gig HDD... and yes the bins are built into the firmware of the HDD no into the enclosure.. and so far MS has yet to ban anyone with just a modded HDD.. usually the people with the modded HD also have flashed the DVD.. if you get the 120 and swap the HDD's in the enclosures it will void the warrenty on them but how often do HDD's go bad? the adapter inside the enclosure is just a modified ESATA connection.. if you decide to do make ur own HDD pm me and i'll fill you in on all of the details that the article leaves out..

Thanks for the offer, but I don't want to risk getting banned just to save a few bucks, better to just spend the extra 50-75 for an offical HD than to have to spend 200-250 for a new 360 :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I also bit the bullet (& my lip) and bought the overpriced 120GB HDD before the NXE came out. But honestly, it's worth it. I have Fable 2, Gears 2, and Fallout 3 installed and play these (almost) as quietly as my PS3 games. Plus if you ever need to get a new console or anything, you can just keep the HDD. Maybe it even has some resale value.

you do know if you buy a new HD and recover your gamertag to it you can redownload all your previous downloads.. if you go to the account management tab on the xbox it has a list of everything you have downloaded previously.. if you happen to have a buddy with a memory card i would use that to transfer your game saves and gamertag but just redownload everything else

Why would I need to do that if I have the transfer kit? Also you can't redownload the Rock Band tracks from the disc without having to buy a new license

Haha, yeah that's pretty much the reason why I need a bigger HDD, I think I've been running into issues because I was down to 500 megs so games didn't have enough room to cache. Decided to just delete Fable 2 off my HD until the freezing glitch has been fixed, or until I get a different disc to check. I'd like to install Fallout 3 to my HD

are you buying the 120 gig HD because i dont think the 60 gig works with the transfer kit unless MS changed it

I'm leaning towards the 120gig because I don't think the 60gig comes with a transfer kit, or if it even works to transfer to it... that and I dont need a third headset :)

This might be useful. (http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=7191) Looks like we're finally getting something out of the Circuit City bankruptcy. Wish I had known this back when I bought a 120GB for $140 from Amazon.
